Made of lines down and lines across 3

  • E F H E is 4 strokes: one line down, then bars across the top, the middle and the bottom. F is the same without the bottom bar. H is down, down, then across the middle.
  • l i t Lowercase l is one line down from the top line. i is a short line down from the middle line, then a dot. t goes down and ends in a small hook to the right, then gets a bar across near the middle line.
  • L T I L is 1 stroke: down, then along the bottom line without lifting. T is 2: down, then a bar across the top. I is 3: down, then a short bar on top and a short bar below.

Made with slanted lines 6

  • 1 4 7 The three numerals with no curve in this style. 1 is a short flag up, a line straight down and a bar along the bottom. 4 is a slant down to the left and a line across, then a line down. 7 is across, then a slant down to the left.
  • A K Y A is 3 strokes: a slant down to the left from the top point, a slant down to the right from the same point, then a bar across. K is a line down, then a slant in to the middle and out again. Y is a short slant to the middle, then a longer slant that meets it and drops straight down.
  • k x y 2 strokes each. k is a tall line down, then a slant in and a slant out. x is one slant, then the other across it. y is a short slant, then a long slant that carries on below the bottom line.
  • M N Z M is a line down, then from the top: slant down, slant up and straight down. N is a line down, then a slant from the top to the bottom right and a line straight up. Z is 1 stroke: across, slant down to the left, across.
  • V W X V is 1 stroke: slant down to the right, then slant back up, which is one point of the Zigzag row. W is two of those points in a single stroke. X is 2 strokes, the same two slants as the X shapes row.
  • v w z Three lowercase letters that take 1 stroke each. v and w are the capitals made smaller: the same slants, from the middle line down to the bottom line. z is across, slant down to the left, across.

Made of circles, waves, arches and cups 4

  • 0 3 8 Numerals made of curves only. 0 starts at the top and goes round to the left. 3 is two curves, the lower one a little wider. 8 starts at the top right, bends like an S and comes back up to where it began.
  • n m h All three hold the move of the Arches row: up, over and down. n is a short line down, then one arch. m has two arches. h is a tall line down, then one arch.
  • O C Q O starts at the top and goes round to the left, the way the Circles button draws its circles. C is the same move left open. Q is an O with a short tail added as a second stroke.
  • S U J S is 1 stroke that bends left, then right, then left again, like a wave stood on end. U is the move of the Cups row: down, under and up. J is a line down that hooks to the left, with no bar on top in this style.

One straight line and one curve 2

  • b d p One straight line and one round part each. b is a tall line down, then round to the right. d is the round part first, then up to the top line and straight down. p is a line down below the bottom line, then round to the right.
  • D P B Each is a line down, then a second stroke from the top that curves. D takes one big curve to the bottom. P takes a small curve to the middle. B takes two curves, one above the other.

  • FILL THE LEFT TILE 15 letters. E is the slowest of the six at 4 strokes, and it comes up 3 times here.
  • I FELT THE HILL TILT Another 16 letters from the same six capitals. L comes up 4 times, and it is the quickest of the six to write: 1 stroke.
  • L T I F H E The six capitals made of lines down and across, fewest strokes first: L takes 1, T takes 2, I, F and H take 3 each and E takes 4.
  • LIFT THE LITTLE ELF 16 letters, every one of them E, F, H, I, L or T. The whole line is made of lines down and lines across, with no slant and no curve.

With slanted letters, still no curves 5

  • A E F H I K L M N T V W X Y Z The 15 capitals with no curve in this Print style. The other 11 (B, C, D, G, J, O, P, Q, R, S and U) each have a curved part.
  • A TALL WHITE KITE 14 letters with no curve. A, W and K bring in the slants, and the other letters are down and across only.
  • AN ANT MET A FLY 12 letters. A, N, M and Y carry the slants, and N comes up twice.
  • I LIKE THE WAY WE WALK 17 letters. W comes up 3 times, and each W is two zigzag points in a single stroke.
  • MY KITE FELL IN THE LAKE 19 letters, the longest sentence in this list. M, Y, K, N and A have slants and the rest are down and across only.

Curved capitals only 3

  • CUBS DUG UP BUGS 13 letters from the curved capitals. B comes up twice, and each B is a line down and two curves.
  • GOOD DOG 7 letters, all round or part round: G, O and D. A line for the day after the Circles row.
  • OUR DOG DUG UP CROPS 16 letters and not one made of straight lines alone. U is the move of the Cups row and S is a wave stood on end.

Numerals made of straight lines 3

  • 1 4 7 11 14 17 41 47 71 74 Ten numbers written with 1, 4 and 7 alone, the three numerals that have no curve in this style.
  • 4 + 7 = 11 A sum with no curve anywhere: the numerals are 4, 7 and 1, the plus sign is the cross from the Crosses row and the equals sign is two lines across.
  • 7 + 7 = 14 A double written with straight lines only. Each 7 is 1 stroke: across, then a slant down to the left.

At Large (19 mm) a Letter page holds 13 vertical lines, 5 horizontal lines, 9 of each slant, 7 crosses, 8 X shapes, a zigzag of 12 points and 8 waves. To change the rows, open Lines and shapes to trace and pick up to 12 kinds. Arches, cups, loops and a castle wall are there too.

From preschool line tracing worksheets to letters

Open More options and set What to practice to Letter groups. The sheet then traces letters sorted by the lines that build them: L T I and E F H need only down and across, and V W X adds the slants. The arrows show one common way to draw each line.

  • For straight line tracing worksheets, keep Vertical lines and Horizontal lines and set Rows to trace to 4.
  • For horizontal line tracing worksheets, keep that one kind at 8 rows: 40 lines on a Letter page.
  • As line tracing worksheets for toddlers, choose Extra large (26 mm) and 3 kinds. Start with a finger.

Are these free line tracing worksheets for preschool?

Yes. For line tracing worksheets, preschool or home, Large and Extra large rows leave room for a crayon. By the CDC's milestone list, most children (75% or more) hold a crayon between fingers and thumb, not in a fist, by age 4.
