The ck c k worksheet: sort by spelling
Open More options and choose Sort by list from List 5. It mixes ck after short u with k after a consonant (milk, desk) and k after two vowels (peek, leak), to write under three headings. The pattern to spot: straight after a short vowel the ending is ck; after a consonant or two vowel letters it is k.
Is ck a blend?
People look for ck blend worksheets, but ck is a digraph: two letters, one sound. In a blend such as st you hear both. Lists 9 and 10 set c against k at the start of a word: cold, corn and cart, then kite, key and kept.
- Lists 11 and 12 are two-syllable words: ck in the middle (pocket, bucket) and c alone at the end (picnic, magic).
- The print ends with the answer key. To drop it, untick Add an answer key as the last page under More options.
- In wreck the w is silent, and in quick and quack the qu says kw. The hints under the tool say so.
Questions and answers
When do you write ck and when k?
Write ck at the end of a word straight after a short vowel: neck, clock, duck. After a consonant (milk), after two vowel letters (peek) or when a long vowel takes a silent e (like), the sound is written k.
Why do cat and kite start with different letters?
Before a, o and u the k sound is written c: cart, cold, curl. Before e and i a c would sound like s, as in city, so the word starts with k: key, kite, kept.
Do the ck worksheets print with answers?
Five sheets do: Missing letters, Word shapes, Unscramble, ABC order and Sort by list. The key is the last page, with every ck written in. Trace and write and Write a sentence have nothing to mark.
Can I type my own ck words?
Yes, up to 20, one to a line, in Your spelling words. A typed word loses about one letter in three, picked at random, so its blank may not be the ck. Word shapes and Unscramble treat typed words like ours.
