How it works

These letter E tracing worksheets open on 3 rows of capital E, 3 of lowercase e, then egg and elbow, each with an empty row. Open Pick from the 84 rows and words for 57 E words sorted by the sound the e makes.

Read the full guide

Where the pencil starts on E and e

Capital E's dot is at the top left corner. Lowercase e is the odd one out: its dot sits on the left, about 6 mm up, halfway to the dashed line. At Large (19 mm), page 1 holds 18 capitals and 24 lowercase. Page 2 holds egg 9 times and elbow 6. Typing replaces all four rows. To keep E and e e e e, press them first in Pick from the 84 rows and words.

Pick E words by the sound of the e

Short e words come first, with end, engine and others where n or m follows the e set apart. Eagle, eat and eel start with long e. Then short e in the middle (bed, jet), double e (tree, feet) and silent e (cake, kite).

  • Say it first: straight across, then up, over and around. The line across begins at the dot.
  • Type E F L on one line of the Words box: three straight-line capitals sharing a starting corner.

Questions and answers

Is egg a good key word for short e?

For most classes, yes. In parts of the Upper Midwest, the Pacific Northwest and Canada some speakers say egg closer to long a. Across much of the South an e before n or m sounds like short i. Elbow, elf and elk have neither problem.

Why is the dot on lowercase e so low?

Every other lowercase letter in the Print style has its dot near the dashed line or higher. On e the dot marks the left end of the line across the middle, so it sits halfway up. Point to it before the first row.

Do silent e words belong on a letter E sheet?

Yes. E is the most used letter in English, and a final e is usually silent. Type cap cape on one line of the Words box and kit kite on the next: the last e is traced but never said. See more letters.
