Metaphor and simile worksheets
The page opens on Simile or metaphor (66 sentences, half of each). Many come in pairs, so her hands were as cold as ice sits in the bank beside her hands were ice.
Finish the simile
Set has a similes-only sheet: 39 common similes with the last word blank, such as as busy as a ___, and three words to circle (bee, sloth, rock).
- Like or as alone does not make a simile: I like apples compares nothing. Look for two things being compared.
Questions and answers
What is the difference between a simile and a metaphor?
A simile says one thing is like another, using like or as: the lake was as smooth as glass. A metaphor drops like and as and says it is the other thing: the lake was a mirror.
What grade learns similes and metaphors?
The Common Core asks fourth graders to explain the meaning of simple similes and metaphors (L.4.5a) and fifth graders to interpret them in context (L.5.5a).
Is there an answer key?
Yes. It prints as the last page unless you untick Add an answer key as the last page under More options. It circles the right answer under every item of the sheet you print.
