The sight words and their practice lines

The word on its own, and beside the numeral 4

  • 2 two 2 two The numeral beside the word, twice over. Have the child draw two dots under every 2 and every two.
  • two 3 letters for 2 sounds: t, then oo. The w in the middle is written and never said. The t stands up; the w and the o stay under the dashed line.
  • Two two Capital T beside small t. The capital is needed when the count opens the sentence, as in Two pups sit up.
  • two two two Three to trace in one row. Each w is four slanted strokes, down, up, down, up, made without lifting the pencil.

Spot-the-word rows 4

  • ten two top two ton Circle two 2 times. Ten, top and ton are three-letter words that start with t and have no w.
  • tow two toe two Circle two 2 times. Tow, to pull, is the same three letters in another order. Toe swaps the w for an e.
  • two to two too two Circle two 3 times. To and too sound exactly the same, so only the w marks the number.
  • who two won two Circle two 2 times. Who is built from w, h and o and rhymes with the target. Won has the w and the o but no t.

Missing-letter rows 3

  • t_in t_ice t_o The same letter finishes twin, twice and two: w. In twin and twice it can be heard. In two it has gone quiet.
  • t_o tw_ _wo One letter is missing each time: w, then o, then t. The w comes first because the ear cannot supply it.
  • two tw_ t__ ___ A fading row. Copy the word, then write one more letter from memory each time until all three are the child's own.

Things that come in twos 12

  • in two Cut it in two means cut it into halves, so here the word names the parts and not the count.
  • two by two In pairs, the way a class lines up with partners. The y in by says the name of the letter i.
  • two ears A pair to point to. The e-a-r in ears says the word ear.
  • two eyes A pair everyone has. Eyes is a word to learn whole, because none of its letters say their usual sound.
  • two feet A pair to stamp. The two e's in feet say the name of the letter e.
  • two for you Two and you rhyme, yet neither one spells its oo sound with a double o.
  • two more A request at snack time. The o-r-e in more says or.
  • two of us A pair of people. Of is said uv, and us sounds out.
  • two socks A pair to wear. Socks sounds out; the c-k says one k sound.
  • two wheels What a bike rolls on. The w-h in wheels says w, and the two e's say the name of the letter e.
  • two wings A bird's pair. Wings sounds out, and here the w is spoken, unlike the one in the number.
  • two, four, six Counting by twos. Six sounds out; four has the o-u-r of pour.

Sentences to read and copy 12

  • A hen has two wings. 5 words. One w is silent and the next one is spoken. Ask the child which is which.
  • The bell rang at two. 5 words. Here the word is a time on the clock. Bell and rang both sound out.
  • Can I have two? 4 words and a question mark. The number is the last word, where a child reading aloud gives it full weight.
  • Cut the cake in two. 5 words. In two means into halves. Cut sounds out; the e on cake makes its a say its name.
  • Give two to Ben. 4 words. Two and to sit one word apart: the number has the w, and the word that points to Ben does not.
  • I have two hands. 4 words. Hands sounds out. Have is a word to learn whole, because the e on its end does nothing to the a.
  • I have two, too. 4 words. The number, then the too that means also. They sound the same, so the spelling has to carry the meaning.
  • My dog is two. 4 words. Here the word is an age, and it comes last. Dog sounds out.
  • Pick two red blocks. 4 words. A command the child can carry out at the block shelf after reading it.
  • Two and two is four. 5 words. The word appears twice, once with a capital T. Write 2 + 2 = 4 under it.
  • Two pups sit up. 4 words. After the capital T word, every word sounds out: pups, sit, up.
  • We sat two by two. 5 words. The word appears twice. Sat sounds out, and the class can act the line out on the rug.

A w you can see but not hear

Two has 3 letters and 2 sounds, t and oo. Wiktionary lists to and too as exact sound-alikes, so the ear gives no help with the w. Twin, twice, twelve and twenty share a root with two, and each still sounds the w. Say them aloud. On the board, write the row "t_in t_ice t_o" from the full list near the bottom of this page. Only sentences can go on the sheet.

Draw the number first, sort the spellings later

The line "2 two 2 two" sets numeral beside word, and the phrases are pairs to sketch: eyes, ears, feet, wings, socks. Hold to and too back until two is secure. Then "Give two to Ben." and "I have two, too." put the spellings in one line.

  • Give the child a spelling voice: say twoo, with the w sounded on purpose, while writing.
  • Two rhymes with you, do, who and blue, yet no two of the five spell oo alike.
  • Count by twos aloud, then write two, four, six and the numerals 2, 4, 6 beside them.

Questions and answers

Why is there a w in two?

Because it used to be spoken. Old English twa began with a t-w sound, and Scots twa still does. English speech dropped the w from two and kept the spelling. Tell children the quiet w ties two to twin and twice.

My student writes tow or tuw for two. What helps?

Tow means the letters are known and the order is not. Write the row "t_o tw_ _wo" on the board. Tuw is an ear spelling: oo written as u. Show that the last letter is o, which also says oo in to, do and who.

Can the sight word two be sounded out?

Not fully. The t is plain and the o says oo as it does in to. Nothing tells a child to write a w between them. Teach it whole, beside the numeral 2.
