The sight words and their practice lines

The word on its own 3

  • will 4 letters for 3 sounds: w, short i, and one l sound that is written twice. The w and the i stay under the dashed line; both ls reach the top line.
  • Will will Capital W opens a question such as Will you come? Will is also a first name, so children meet the capital often.
  • will will will The word is narrow, so three fit on one row with room to spare. Check that both tall sticks touch the top line in every copy.

Spot-the-word rows 4

  • hill will mill will Circle will 2 times. Hill and mill rhyme with it, so only the first letter differs, and an m is close to a w turned over.
  • will we'll will I'll Circle will 2 times. We'll and I'll are we will and I will pushed together: the apostrophe stands where the w and the i dropped out.
  • will well will wall Circle will 2 times. Well and wall keep the w and the double l and change only the vowel, so the second letter decides.
  • will with will win Circle will 2 times. With has the same outline, two short letters then two tall ones, but its tall pair is t and h. Win stops after three letters.

Missing-letter rows 3

  • wi__ w__l __ll Two letters are missing each time: l and l, then i and l, then w and i.
  • wil_ wi_l w_ll _ill One letter is missing each time: l, l, i, then w. The first two gaps are both l, because the word needs two of them.
  • will wi__ ____ A fading row. Copy the word, add the double l to w-i, then write all four letters with nothing to look at.

Phrases: will in front of a doing word 12

  • I will try A promise. Try starts with the blend t-r and ends in a y that sounds like the word I.
  • it will fall A guess about what comes next: a tower of blocks, a leaf, a loose tooth. Fall rhymes with call.
  • it will fit A telling phrase. It, will and fit all have the short i, and every word sounds out.
  • we will win All three words start with w, so this is the phrase for practicing that zigzag. Win sounds out.
  • will call you Call doubles its l too, but its a says aw, as in ball and tall.
  • will fill it Fill rhymes with will and is spelled the same way from the second letter on.
  • will it fit The same three words with the first two swapped. Putting will first turns a telling line into an asking one.
  • will not stop Will not is written as two words in every line here. The short form, won't, changes the vowel and is best left for later.
  • will pull Pull doubles its l, and its u is the u of put and push, not the u of cup.
  • will tell Two words that end in a double l after a short vowel. Have the child underline both pairs.
  • will yell Yell sounds out: y, e, l. Like will, it writes its last sound twice.
  • you will see See has the double e of bee and tree. You is a word to know whole.

Sentences to read and copy 14

  • I will help you. 4 words. A promise, the job will does most often in a classroom. Help sounds out and ends in the blend l-p.
  • I will not tell. 4 words. A promise to keep a secret. Will and tell both end in ll after a short vowel.
  • It will not fit. 4 words. Three of them have the short i. Will not stays as two words.
  • It will snow a lot. 5 words. A guess about the weather. Snow has the ow of grow and low.
  • Jill will fill it. 4 words, and three of them rhyme. Jill, will and fill differ only in the first letter. Jill is a made-up name.

  • We will go at ten. 5 words. A plan with a time in it. Go ends in a long o; at and ten sound out.
  • What will you make? 4 words and a question mark. Here will comes second, after the asking word. Make ends in a silent e.
  • Will will dig. 3 words. The first Will is a made-up boy's name, so it has a capital; the second is the helper word. All three words have the short i.
  • Will you read to me? 5 words and a question mark. Will comes first, with a capital W. Read has the ea of eat.
  • Yes, I will. 3 words. At the end of a sentence will is always said in full, never as 'll, so this is the line for hearing the whole word.

How this list was compiled: Every line was written for this site on 2026-09-18 and read aloud for sense. No line is taken from a published sight word list or workbook, and the page claims no list or grade level for the word. Spellings were checked against the macOS system word list on 2026-09-18; the short forms we'll, I'll and won't are not in that list and were checked one by one. The counts in the spot-the-word rows and the word counts of the sentences were worked out. That will is said w, short i, l, that it is commonly cut down to 'll, and that its negative is won't and not willn't: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/will (pronunciation, alternative forms and usage notes, checked 2026-09-18). That I'll is a contraction of I will: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/I%27ll (checked 2026-09-18). That won't comes from older forms such as wonnot and woll not: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/won%27t (etymology, checked 2026-09-18). That will is one of the helping verbs said in a reduced form inside a sentence but in full at the end of one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stress_and_vowel_reduction_in_English (checked 2026-09-18). That a doubled consonant usually marks a short vowel before it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_orthography (checked 2026-09-18). Sound notes describe general American pronunciation. How it works

Will has three sounds and four letters, and the second l goes missing on paper. This will sight word worksheet has the child trace it and circle it among "well", "wall", "with" and "win". They finish the sentence I ___ help you.

Read the full guide

Will sounds out, but the second l slips

Will is regular: w, short i, l. The catch is that one l sound takes two letters. A doubled consonant usually marks a short vowel. Its rhymes are built the same way: hill, fill, bill, mill, spill. Speech often cuts it to 'll. A child who says I'll may not hear will inside it. At the end of a sentence it is said whole. Begin with "Yes, I will."

Double-l pairs to underline

Five phrases at the foot of this page pair will with a second double-l word. They are "will tell", "will fill it", "will yell", "will call you" and "will pull". The child writes each, then underlines all 10 double ls. To print one, type it into A sentence with it.

  • Say short, short, tall, tall while writing. "With" shares that outline, so add the row "will with will win" on the board.
  • Dictate "It will fit." All three words have a short i, so it shows whether the second l arrives unprompted.
  • To link will to 'll, write "I will" and cover w-i with a sticky note showing an apostrophe.

Questions and answers

Is will memorized or sounded out?

Sounded out. W and short i say their usual sounds, and the double l says one l, as in bell, doll and hill. The only part to remember is the second l. On the board, the row "wil_ wi_l w_ll _ill" asks for it.

Why does my student mix up will and with?

Both start w-i and end in two tall letters, so the outlines match. Only will repeats a letter. On the board, circle will twice in "will with will win". "I will go with you.", under Pick from the 14 sentences with "will", holds both words.

Should the sheet teach won't as well?

Not yet. Won't is will not pushed together, but it does not look like it. The regular form would be willn't, and won't goes back to older forms such as woll not. Every line here writes will not as two words.
