How it works
This sight word and sheet has the child trace the word, circle it among an, end and ant, and write it into Mom ___ I can run. Then they cut out the tiles a, n and d and build it.

And sounds out, so teach it by ear first
Nothing in and is irregular: three letters for three sounds, a, n, d. The trouble is how it is spoken. The Oxford English Corpus ranking on Wikipedia puts it fifth among all English words, and like most small joining words it is rarely stressed. Inside a sentence it shrinks toward an, and in many American accents its a drifts toward the e of end. Children write what they hear. So start with the ear, not the pencil.
An order for the week
One order for the list under the tool: the word alone, the missing-letter rows, the circling rows, pairs such as in and out, then a sentence. A pair typed into A sentence with it prints with one word on each side of and.
- The a and the d start with the same round stroke. That anchors children who flip b and d.
- Dictate a pair such as hot and cold and have the child write only the joining word.
- Point out the & sign on a shop front: it began as the joined letters of et, Latin for and.
Questions and answers
Why does my student write an or end instead of and?
In a sentence the d drops and the a can come close to a short e. Say the word alone and tap a, n, d on three fingers. Then write this row on the board and ask for 3 circles: and an and end and.
Is and a sight word if it can be sounded out?
Yes, in the sense that matters: a word read at a glance. And is fully decodable, so let the child sound it out the first few times. The glance comes from meeting it in almost every sentence they read.
Is this and sight word worksheet free to print?
Yes. Printing is free for home and classroom use, as many copies as you need. The answer key gives the circle count and the missing word.
