The y is doing the job of an i
Said aloud, my is m plus the name of the letter i. English usually ends a word with y where the sound calls for i. In short words that y stays long: my, by, fly, sky, try, why. In fast speech, Wiktionary records my sounding like me in parts of Britain and Ireland. So a child who says me hat is reporting an accent, not misreading.
Let each child own a sentence
My is the word of personal writing. After This is my dog. ask what really is theirs, and have the child write that word in place of dog. My name is starts a line every child finishes differently. Press Show all 33 practice lines near the foot of this page to find it.
- The y is the only letter with a tail. If it perches on the line like a v, compare tails.
- Read by my fly my sky aloud from the board. Every word ends in the same sound and the same letter.
- My, what a big fish! uses the word as a cry of surprise. Read it with wide eyes.
Questions and answers
Why does my student write mi or mie for my?
Because that is what the ear reports: m, then the name of the letter i. Show that by and fly end the same way, then write the missing-letter row m_ _y m_ on the board. It asks for the y twice. Rows do not print.
How do I help a child who mixes up my and me?
Both are two letters starting with m, so the ending decides: y for the sound of i, e for the sound of e. Write the row my me my by my on the board, read each word aloud together, and ask for 3 circles.
Can the my sight word be sounded out?
Partly. The m is plain, and the y follows a pattern, not its usual sound. At the end of a short word it says the name of i, as in by, fly and sky. Teach the pattern and the word stops being an exception.
