Questions and answers
Why does my student write uv, or just a, for of?
The ear gives no help. The f says v, the o sounds like a short u, and in a fast phrase the v drops as well. Say the word alone, name its two letters, then practice it after cup, bag, box and lot.
How do I stop children mixing up of and off?
Give them different jobs. Of goes between two things, as in a box of pens. Off is the opposite of on and ends with a clear f sound. Write of off of on of on the board to set all three side by side.
Can the sight word of be sounded out?
No. Neither letter says its usual sound, so tapping o and f gives a word nobody says. Teach it whole: say uv, spell o-f, and write it inside a phrase, where it does its real work.
