The sight words and their practice lines

The word on its own 3

  • little 6 letters in two beats, lit and tle. The double t keeps the i short, and the le is said as a bare l sound with a silent e. Four of the six letters rise above the dashed middle line.
  • Little little Capital L beside small l. Count the l shapes in this line: one capital and three small. Titles use the capital, as in Little Red Hen.
  • little little little little Four to trace in one row. The word is long but thin: l, i and t are narrow letters, so its six take less room than the four of a wide word such as come.

Spot-the-word rows 4

  • litter little like little Circle little 2 times. Litter shares the first four letters, l-i-t-t, so the ending decides: le or er. Like is shorter and has a k.
  • little letter little Circle little 2 times. Letter is just as long, starts with l and has the same double t in the middle. The second letter decides: i or e.
  • middle little riddle Circle little 1 time. Middle and riddle end in ddle, which is close to how the tt sounds in American speech. The ear says d; the spelling says t.
  • title little tile little Circle little 2 times. Title ends in the same t-l-e but has a single t, and its i is long. Tile has no t in the middle at all.

How this list was compiled: Every line was written for this site on 2026-09-18 and read aloud for sense. No line is taken from a published sight word list or workbook, and the page claims no list or grade level for the word. Three phrases borrow words from the titles of old works for children, and no lyric or story text is quoted: little star from the lullaby Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, with words by Jane Taylor first published in 1806 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twinkle,_Twinkle,_Little_Star), a little lamb from the nursery rhyme Mary Had a Little Lamb, first published by Sarah Josepha Hale in 1830 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Had_a_Little_Lamb), and the little red hen from the fable of that name, in which a hen bakes bread after the other animals refuse to help (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Red_Hen); all three checked 2026-09-18. Spellings were checked against the macOS system word list on 2026-09-18; the inflected form fills is not a headword there and was checked separately. The counts in the spot-the-word rows and the word counts of the sentences were worked out. That little has two syllables divided lit-tle, that the second is a bare l sound with no vowel, and that American speakers say the tt as a quick tap: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/little (pronunciation and hyphenation, checked 2026-09-18). How it works

American speech turns little into liddle, so children write lidl. This sight word little worksheet has the child trace it, circle it among letter, litter, like and title, and finish The bug is ___.

Read the full guide

Why little sounds like liddle

American speakers say the tt in little as a quick tap of the tongue, the same tap that lets butter be heard as budder. So the child hears a d and writes lidl, or a single t. A doubled consonant usually marks the vowel before it as short. Little has a short i, and title, with a single t, has a long one.

Little for size, a little for amount

In my little toe the word tells size. In my little sister it means younger. With a in front it becomes an amount: a little bit, a little while, We had a little rain. Press Show all 36 practice lines near the foot of this page for all three kinds. Ask which kind each one is.

  • Clap the two beats before writing. On the board, the row lit___ ___tle little has the child finish one beat at a time.
  • In print letters the l's reach the top line and the t's stop a little lower.
  • The child may already sing this word. Write little star or a little lamb and ask which song it is.

Questions and answers

Why does my student spell little with a d or with one t?

American speech turns the tt into a quick d, and no ear can tell that a t is doubled. Say that the word has twin t's, then write the row li__le ke__le bo__le on the board, where tt fills every gap.

How do I help a child who mixes up little and like?

Count letters and beats. Like has 4 letters and one beat, and little has 6 and two. Write the row litter little like little on the board and ask for 2 circles. Then read I like the little one. aloud, pointing at each l word.

Can the sight word little be sounded out?

The first beat can: l, short i, t. The second is a bare l sound spelled t-l-e with a silent e, which has to be learned as a chunk. Kettle, bottle and middle end the same way.
