Ake word family words in four lists
List 1 puts one letter in front: bake, cake, fake, lake, make, rake, take, wake. List 2 puts two: brake, flake, shake, snake, stake, quake, drake. List 3 is compound words such as pancake, snowflake and handshake. List 4 has longer words with the stress on the ending: awake, mistake, overtake.
Took, shook, woke: past forms that change
Bake, rake, fake and quake add d: baked, raked. Four family words change instead. The American Heritage Dictionary gives take, took, taken; shake, shook, shaken; make, made; wake, woke or waked. The longer verbs of List 4 follow them: overtook, partook, forsook, remade, awoke.
- Drop the e before -ing: baking, making, taking, shaking, waking.
- A drake is a male duck, and a namesake is someone or something named after another.
Questions and answers
Can I print ake word family worksheets?
Yes. Each of the four lists prints by itself: as a Word list with a sentence for every word, a Test sheet, an ABC order sheet or a Missing letters sheet. List 1, with bake and cake, has the shortest words.
Do break and steak rhyme with cake?
Yes. The American Heritage Dictionary writes break as (brāk) and steak as (stāk), exactly as it writes brake and stake. They spell long a with ea, so they are not on these lists. Ache (āk) rhymes as well.
What vowel sound do ake words have?
Long a. The dictionary writes it ā, so cake is (kāk) and snake is (snāk). All 35 words on these lists say it.
