How it works
These letter X tracing worksheets print dotted rows of capital X and lowercase x, then box and fox. Few words start with x, so most of the 80 below have it in the middle or at the end.

X and x, then box and fox
At Large (19 mm), capital X fits 5 to a row on Letter and A4, so 3 rows hold 15. Lowercase x prints as 2 groups of 4, 24 in all, and page 2 repeats box and fox 9 times each. Both sizes start at the dot on the top left. Typed words replace all four sample rows. To keep the letter rows, put X on line 1 of the Words box and x x x x on line 2.
Practice x where children meet it
Only 4 words in the list start with x. Thirty end in x, from box to mailbox, and 22 have it in the middle: taxi, next, sixty. Names are here too, from Max to Xi'an.
- Say the strokes from the dot: slant down right, lift, slant down left, crossing in the middle.
- In the Words box, type v w x y z on one line: all five start at the top left.
- For the board: X is 10 in Roman numerals, x is the unknown in math, and X marks the spot.
Questions and answers
Does x say ks, gz or z?
All three. At the end of a word, and after a stressed vowel, it says ks: box, taxi, sixty. Before a stressed vowel it usually says gz: exam, exact, example. At the start it usually says z, as in xylophone. Teach ks first.
What if a child's x looks like a plus sign?
Both lines of x lean. Draw a light square around a dotted x and ask for corner to corner: from the dot at top left to bottom right, then top right to bottom left. See the list of letters for v, w, y and z.
Can I print a name with an x, such as Max or Xavier?
Yes. Give each name its own line in the Words box. At Large, Rex fits 3 times across a row, Max and Xavier twice, and Xander once. A share link carries whatever is typed, so keep student names out of links.
