One shape at two sizes

Capital Z and lowercase z are the same three straight lines: a top, a slant and a bottom. At Large the capital is about 17 mm tall and the lowercase 12. Both start at the dot on the top left. Typed words replace all four sample rows. To keep the letter rows, put Z on line 1 of the Words box and z z z z on line 2.

Z is rare, so the list looks inside words

Z is the least used letter in written English, so the list looks inside words too. It has 11 double z words (buzz, fizz, puzzle) and 16 with one z in the middle or at the end (maze, lizard, quiz). In pizza, waltz and quartz the z does not say z.

  • A backwards z looks like an s with corners. In the Words box, type z s z s.
  • Zip and zap differ by one letter. Print both to show short i beside short a. Each fits 3 across.

Questions and answers

Is the letter called zee or zed?

Both are right. Zee is the name in American English. In Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and most other English-speaking countries it is zed, a name that goes back to the Greek letter zeta. Either way, it is the last of the letters.

Why does the zz in pizza say ts?

English borrowed pizza from Italian, where z can stand for ts, and kept the sound. In waltz and quartz the z follows a t and says s. Every other z on the list says its own sound, and a double z is said once.

Can I trace a name that starts with Z?

Yes. Eight Z first names are listed, and the Words box takes any other. At Large, Zoe fits 3 times across a row, Zack and Zane twice, Zachary once. A share link carries what you typed, so leave student names out of it.
