How it works

This levels of organization graphic organizer sets the five levels of a living body in order, smallest at the top, with an arrow from each to the next. Every level is built from the one before it.

How the five levels build

Cells that work together make a tissue. Different tissues make up an organ, organs working together form an organ system, and all the organ systems together make an organism. Read a finished sheet aloud this way to check it: each box should be made of what is in the box above.

  • Follow one example all the way up, as the sample does: heart muscle cell, heart muscle, heart, circulatory system, person.
  • A living thing made of a single cell has no tissues or organs to list.

Questions and answers

What are the 5 levels of organization in order?

Cell, tissue, organ, organ system and organism, in order from the smallest to the largest.

What is the difference between an organ and an organ system?

An organ is one structure made of different tissues, such as the heart. An organ system is a set of organs working together. The circulatory system includes the heart, the blood vessels and the blood.

What are the levels of organization in an ecosystem?

Above a single organism come the population, the community, the ecosystem and the biosphere. A population is one species living in an area, and a community is the populations that live there together. The ecology sheet has a box for each.

Cell to organism 6

  • Draw each level A box for each level with a space to sketch an example over lines to say what it is.
  • Levels chart: what it is and an example The five levels printed down the side, with a box beside each for what it is and a box for an example.
  • Levels of organization graphic organizer: cell to organism Five numbered boxes joined by arrows, smallest level first: cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism. Each has lines for what the level is and an example.
  • One organ system, level by level Name an organ system at the top, then write one cell, one tissue and one organ that belong to it and what the whole system does.
  • Sideways chart with a drawing column The same chart on a landscape page with a third box in every row for a quick sketch.
  • Two to a page: the five levels in order Two half sheets with a cut line between them. Each has five empty boxes joined by arrows, to fill in from memory, smallest level first.

Smaller and larger levels 3

  • Ecology levels: organism to biosphere Five numbered boxes that start at a single living thing and go up: organism, population, community, ecosystem, biosphere.
  • Longer chart: atom to organism Eight rows that start below the cell: atom, molecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism.
  • Longest chart: cell to biosphere Nine rows that run from the cell through the organism and on to the biosphere.

Filled-in sample 1
