How this list was compiled: Our own selection and grouping of 72 English words with a long u, nine lists of eight, one spelling and one of the two sounds to a list: yoo as in cube, or oo as in flute, with our own hints. The letters left out of every word are the letters that spell long u. Every word was checked by script on 2026-10-01 (recruit on 2026-10-02) in two places: its entry in the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (https://www.ahdictionary.com/), where every full pronunciation given must have the sound its list names and no other (yoo, or oo with no y before it), and the Carnegie Mellon University Pronouncing Dictionary, a record of General American pronunciation (https://github.com/cmusphinx/cmudict), where every listed pronunciation must have the same sound. Words said both ways, with yoo and with plain oo, in either source are left out (tune, new, due, tulip, tuna, student, tuba, duty, tissue). Each hint that says two words sound the same names a pair with the same pronunciation in the pronouncing dictionary, and each hint that splits a word (mu + sic) follows the division printed in the American Heritage entry. Spellings are American. No published word list or reading program was copied. Licence: own work

Long vowel u worksheets for yoo and oo

Each list keeps one spelling and one sound, and a sort takes three lists in a row. List 1 starts cube, flute, blue. List 4 sets rescue and few, which say yoo, against grew, which says oo. List 6 is all oo, sorted by spelling: grew, fruit, ruby.

Words said both ways are left out

Tune, tulip, tuna, student, tuba and duty say yoo for some speakers and oo for others, and the dictionary prints both. A child could file them under either heading, so none is on a list.

  • Take the e off cube, cute, huge and plume and a short u word is left: cub, cut, hug, plum.
  • Missing letters blanks only the long u: c_b_ for cube, resc__ for rescue, j__ce for juice.

Questions and answers

What are the two sounds of long u?

Yoo and oo. In cube, music and few the u sound starts with a y: yoo. In flute, blue, grew and fruit it is a plain oo. Each list here holds one of the two, and its heading says which.

What are the long u spellings?

Five on these lists: u_e as in cube and flute, ue as in rescue and blue, ew as in few and grew, ui as in fruit, and u alone as in music and ruby. Only ui has a single sound here, oo.

Do the long u worksheets have an answer key?

Yes. The key prints after the sheet, with the fifteen words written under their headings. To skip it, open More options and untick Add an answer key as the last page.

Can I sort my own long u words?

Not on the sorting sheet, which needs the headings of our lists. Words you type in Your spelling words, up to 20, print on the other sheets: missing letters, word shapes, unscramble, ABC order, tracing or a sentence.
