List 2 is o with a silent e (rose, phone), List 3 oa (goat, toast), List 4 ow (bowl, window). In List 5 a single o ends the word, as in piano, and in List 6 an earlier syllable: mo-ment, Oc-to-ber. In List 7 it stands before two consonants: hold, post, roll, folk. List 8 has oe, ou and ough (doe, soul, dough), then sew, oh and depot.

  • Overflow and oboe each have two long o sounds with two spellings: o and ow, o and oe.

Questions and answers

Which words go on a long o sound words list?

Any word with the vowel sound of home and go, which is the name of the letter o. The dictionary writes it ō. It can open a word (oak, own, open), sit inside one (stone, toast) or end it (snow, piano, toe).

Is the o long in gold, most and roll?

Yes. In pond, cost and doll the o before two consonants is not long, but in gold, most, roll and folk it is. List 7 holds 20 words like these, and the closed syllable exceptions page has more.

Which long o words sound like another word?

Rode and road, hole and whole, sole and soul, role and roll, toe and tow, doe and dough, so and sew are all on these lists. The sentence read with each word tells which spelling is wanted.

Why are bow, row and doughnut left off?

Bow, row, sow and mow are each said two ways, with long o or with the ow of cow. The American Heritage Dictionary gives doughnut, boulder and enroll a second spelling: donut, bowlder, enrol.
