How it works
These long i worksheets sort by spelling. The sheet on show mixes fifteen words spelled with i_e, igh and i before nd or ld. Three more lists hold y, ie and an i that ends a syllable, as in pilot.

Five more sorts from the other lists
Each sort uses the list on show and the two after it. Under More options, Word list moves the start: List 2 sorts igh, ind and y (night, kind, sky). List 4 sorts y, ie and i alone (reply, untie, pilot). The fifteen words print in a box above three headed columns.
Which y words are left out
List 4 holds words where a last y says long i: sky, reply, butterfly. A last y that says long e, as in happy or tiny, is not a long i spelling, so no such word is on any list.
- Child is on List 3. Its plural, children, has a short i and is on no list.
- For blanks in place of a sort, choose Missing letters under What goes on the sheet: n___t for night, sp__d for spied.
Questions and answers
What are the long i spelling patterns?
Six are sorted here: i_e as in kite, igh as in night, i before nd or ld as in find and child, y as in sky, ie as in pie, and i alone at the end of a syllable, as in pilot.
Is the i in find a long i?
Yes. Find, kind, mind, blind and behind have a long i before nd, and child, wild and mild have one before ld. List 3 keeps them apart from the silent e words, since no e follows.
Is there an answer key for the long i worksheets?
Yes, it prints as the last page, with every word under its heading. Under More options, untick Add an answer key as the last page if you only want the sheet.
Can I type my own long i words?
Yes, up to 20, one to a line, in Your spelling words. They print on the missing letters, word shapes, unscramble and ABC order sheets. A sort needs our lists, so typed words print to trace there.
