How this list was compiled: Our own selection and grouping of 144 English words, with our own hints: thirteen lists of words that end in a silent e after one consonant, sorted by vowel; two lists of short-vowel words, each followed by the same eight words with an e added; and a list of eight common words where the e is silent and the vowel is not long. The letters left out of each word are its vowel and, where it has one, its final e. Every word was checked by script on 2026-10-01 in two places: the Carnegie Mellon University Pronouncing Dictionary, a record of General American pronunciation (https://github.com/cmusphinx/cmudict), where every listed pronunciation must have the long vowel its list names and must end in a consonant sound, so the e is silent; and the word's own entry at https://en.wiktionary.org/, where the rhymes key or the pronunciation line must show the same vowel. A word that failed either check, or for which either source lists a second vowel sound, was left out (nice, stove, kite, stage, prime, fine, cod and none among them). Each word that a rule-breaker hint names as having a long vowel (gave, five, cove, dome, home, tone, lone, grove) was checked in that dictionary too. Each hint that says two words sound the same names a pair with the same pronunciation in that dictionary, and each hint that says a c says s, a g says j or an s says z repeats the last sound that dictionary gives. The rule itself (a single vowel letter, a consonant and the letter e spell the long vowel; a silent e after c or g marks the soft sound; come and done are among the common words that do not follow it) was read on 2026-10-01 at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonics and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_e. Spellings are American. No published word list or reading programme was copied. Licence: own work

How it works

These silent e worksheets open on a sort: fifteen words to write under three headings, cap and pin beside cape and pine. For long vowel silent e worksheets on one vowel, Word list has a_e, i_e, o_e, u_e and e_e lists.

Read the full guide

Sort short vowel from silent e

The page opens on List 14, short a and short i words. The sort adds List 15, the same words with an e (cap, cape; pin, pine), and List 16, short o and short u. The child writes five words under each heading. From List 16 the sort sets hop and cub against hope and cube, with the rule breakers third.

Write the vowel and the e, or sort by vowel

Choose Missing letters under What goes on the sheet. Each word prints with its vowel and its final e left out, m_d_ for made, under a box of the list's eight words. Lists 1 to 13 each keep to one vowel, and a sort from List 1 sets a_e against i_e and o_e.

  • The answer key prints as the last page. To leave it off, open More options and untick Add an answer key as the last page.
  • Every word has a hint under the tool: in mice the c says s, and brake sounds the same as break.
  • Words you type take the place of our list, but a typed list cannot be sorted: it prints to trace.

Questions and answers

What is a silent e?

A final e that makes no sound of its own. After one vowel and one consonant it makes that vowel long, so the vowel says its name: cap turns into cape, and bit into bite. Teachers also call it magic e, or the vowel-consonant-e pattern.

Are there long e silent e worksheets?

Yes. List 13 holds eight e_e words: eve, gene, these, theme, scene, scheme, compete and delete. The pattern is rare in short words, so two of the eight have two beats.

Which words end in a silent e but keep a short vowel?

Have, give, love, glove, come, some, done and gone. List 18 holds them. Each hint under the tool names a word where the same vowel is long, such as gave, five and dome.

Do the silent e worksheets print with answers?

Five of the seven sheets do: Sort by list, Missing letters, Word shapes, Unscramble and ABC order. The key is the last page of the print. Trace and write and Write a sentence have nothing to mark, so they print no key.
