How it works
These long e worksheets sort words by the letters that spell the sound. The sheet on show has fifteen words for three headings: ee, ea and y. Seven lists cover ee, ea, y, e_e, e alone, ey and ie.

Pick the three spellings to sort
A sorting sheet takes five words from the list on show and five from each of the next two. Open More options and choose a Word list: List 4 sorts e_e, e alone and ey (these, secret, honey). List 7 sorts ie against ee and ea (thief, street, wheat).
Long vowel e worksheets with missing letters
Under What goes on the sheet, choose Missing letters. Only the letters that spell long e are blanked: str__t for street, happ_ for happy, th_s_ for these. The eight words of the list sit in a box at the top.
- Lists 3 (y) and 6 (ey) never land on one sorting sheet, so happy and honey are not sorted against each other.
- Under the tool every word has a hint for the adult: meet and meat sound the same, and forty has no u.
Questions and answers
What are the ways to spell long e?
These lists use seven: ee as in street, ea as in wheat, y at the end of happy, e_e as in these, e alone as in me and secret, ey as in honey, and ie as in field and cookie.
Does y say long e?
In happy, baby and penny it does: the last letter, y, says long e. In my, sky and reply the y says long i, so those words are left off these lists.
Do the long e worksheets have an answer key?
Yes. The sort, Missing letters, Word shapes, Unscramble and ABC order print a key as the last page. Trace and write and Write a sentence have nothing to mark. Untick the key under More options to leave it off.
Can I print long e worksheets with my own words?
Yes. Type up to 20 words in Your spelling words, one to a line, and they replace our list. The sort needs our lists, so on that sheet typed words print to trace instead.
