Questions and answers
What is a silent e word?
A word that ends in an e you do not say. Mostly the e makes the vowel before it long: rid becomes ride, cap becomes cape. Phonics lessons also call it magic e, sneaky e or bossy e.
What are the five silent e patterns?
a_e as in cake, i_e as in bike, o_e as in home, u_e as in cube and e_e as in these. In each, a vowel letter, one consonant and a final e spell a long vowel.
Which silent e words break the rule?
Common words such as come, done, give and love: the e is silent, yet the vowel before it does not say its name. Compare come with cone. Silent E Rule Breakers has 18, among them Have, Move and Police.
Does silent e change c and g?
Yes. After c or g a silent e also marks the soft sound: c says s in face, g says j in stage. Soft C and Soft G has 19 such words, from Mice to Cage.
