Accents do not count: café may be typed as cafe, and the marks show how it is written.

Only voices built into this device are used, so the words are not sent to a speech service to be read. With no voice, a person reads the words from the last page of the test sheet.

The words are mixed from the lists you tick, so a review test needs a read-aloud voice.

Sh ch th words, list by list

List 1 starts with sh (shell, shrug) and List 2 ends with it (crush, swish). List 3 starts with ch (chick, chess) and List 4 ends with it after n (bunch, finch). List 5 ends in tch right after a short vowel (patch, stitch). List 6 has th at either end (thick, broth, width).

Three sheets and a spoken test

Word list prints the open list with a sentence under each word. Test sheet has numbered lines and a last page for the grown-up who reads aloud; ABC order and Missing letters come from the same words. Start test says each word, its sentence, then the word again.

  • Put bunch and patch side by side: after n, ch ends the word; right after a short vowel, tch does.

Questions and answers

What are th ch sh words called?

Consonant digraphs: two letters that spell one sound. Say shell slowly and there are three sounds, sh, e and l, but four letters.

When do you spell ch as tch?

At the end of a one-syllable word, right after a short vowel: patch, fetch, pitch, notch, clutch. After a consonant, as in bunch and inch, or a long vowel, it is ch. Much, such and rich break the rule.

Why is check not on the list?

It has a second spelling, cheque, and sounds like Czech, so a typed answer could be marked wrong for the other spelling.
