An o that says short u
Wiktionary gives love the vowel of up: l, short u, v. The o does not say its own short sound, and the final e is silent. Glove and above have the same o-v-e and rhyme with love; some and come use o the same way.
Move looks the same and is not
Move ends in the same o-v-e, but its o says oo. That is why the row love live love move puts them side by side. Live differs by one letter: an i where love has an o.
- Teach it whole: say the word, spell l-o-v-e aloud, then write it.
- Put love beside glove and above and underline o-v-e in all three.
- Dictate We love to sing. and check that love ends with its silent e.
