How this list was compiled: Every line was written for this site on 2026-09-18 and read aloud for sense. No line is taken from a published sight word list or workbook, and the page claims no list or grade level for the word. Spellings were checked against the macOS system word list; box and the plural eggs are absent from that list and were checked one by one. The counts in the spot-the-word rows and the word counts of the sentences were worked out. That in has a short i in its strong form and a reduced vowel in its weak form, that inn is its homophone, and that the weak forms of an and in can sound alike: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/in (pronunciation and homophones, checked 2026-09-19). That speakers with the pin and pen merger say short i and short e alike before m, n and ng, which makes pin and pen, tin and ten, and in and the letter name n sound the same, and that the merger is widespread in the American South: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonological_history_of_English_close_front_vowels (checked 2026-09-19). How it works

Two letters, and five neighbors one letter away

In sounds out: a short i, then n. What slows a child is the crowd around it. Is, it and if share its first letter. On and an share its last. Inside a sentence the vowel fades. Wiktionary lists the weak forms of in and an as sounding alike, so the ear cannot settle it. The eye has to check both letters.

In goes with places

Phrases such as in my bag, in a cup, in the mud and in bed name places. Press Show all 34 practice lines near the foot of this page to see all 12. Put a block in a cup, then beside it. The child says in or not in, and writes the phrase only when it is true.

  • Count the dots on a finished row: one per word. Without a dot, in is a stick and an n.
  • Once in is instant, pin, win and tin cost one new letter each. Read pin in win in tin aloud.
  • In or out is a pair to act at the door: one child calls, the rest step.

Questions and answers

My student reads in as on or an. What helps?

Find the letter that differs. On and an keep the n and change the vowel. Write on in an in on on the board. The child touches each first letter before circling. Then write in is in it in, where the second letter decides.

Why does my student spell in as en, or just n?

It may be accent. Where pin and pen sound the same, as across much of the American South, in sounds like the name of the letter n. Write the missing-letter row i_ _n i_ on the board to fix the i in place.

Can the in sight word be sounded out?

Yes: a short i, then n, each letter doing its usual job. It is practiced by sight because it has to be told from is, it, if, on and an at a glance. That takes repetition, not rules.
