Sound out first, then a long i
The page opens on five words that read letter by letter: fast, fell, fish, fun and funny. A long i has five where the i says its name: find, fine, fire, five and fly. Tricky part has ten where a letter changes its sound or is not heard, such as from, four and friend.
Turn a card, then print
Let the child read the word, then press Show answer to see its sentence. Once a card has been turned, the print links show under it. Show only holds the long i set, the tricky set and All, which prints the 20 cards on two sheets of Letter or A4.
- For and four sound the same. Put the two cards side by side and read each sentence.
- Find has a long i with no e on the end. Set it beside fine and five and ask what is missing.
- Full has the u of pull and put, not the u of fun.
Questions and answers
What are the f sight words?
Our list has 20. Sound out: fast, fell, fish, fun, funny. A long i: find, fine, fire, five, fly. Tricky part: fall, far, father, first, for, found, four, friend, from, full.
Which sight words that start with f are hardest?
Friend and from. The i of friend is not heard, so the word rhymes with send. The o of from says the u of cup. Four comes next: it sounds the same as for and is spelled with a u.
Do all of these words start with the same sound?
Yes, all 20 start with /f/. In fly, from and friend the f blends with the l or r after it, so the two sounds are said close together.
Is this a published sight word list?
No. These are the f words our own sight word pages teach, our own pick of common words of English. No published list is copied, so compare them with the list your school uses.
