How this list was compiled: Clues written for this site, each one describing a family member by the relationship: close family, grandparents, aunts and cousins, family by marriage, and family tree words. Every answer is an entry in Wiktionary (en.wiktionary.org), and the meanings of the cousin, step, half and in-law words were checked there and in English Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org, CC BY-SA 4.0) in October 2026. Four clue sets

Close Family has Mother, Father, Sister, Brother, Son, Daughter and Twin. Grandparents, Aunts and Cousins has Grandmother, Uncle, Niece, Nephew and Second cousin. Family by Marriage has Husband, Wife, Stepsister, Half brother and Mother-in-law. Family Tree Words has Ancestor, Generation, Surname and Heirloom.

Why the clues say mom and dad

Mother and Father are answers, so the clues use mom and dad to describe everyone else: your mom's mom is GRANDMOTHER. An answer of more than one word says so in its clue and goes in with no space or hyphen: SONINLAW.

  • After the puzzle, have students draw a family tree and label it with ten of the answers. Any family shape works.

Questions and answers

Is this family crossword good for ESL students?

Yes. Family words are an early topic in English classes, and the word bank under the clues lets students copy each spelling. For fill-the-gap sentences, try the Family set of the ESL crossword.

What is the difference between a first cousin and a second cousin?

A first cousin is the child of your aunt or uncle, so the two of you share grandparents. A second cousin is the child of your parent's first cousin, so you share great-grandparents. Both are answers in the second set.

Does the family members crossword print with an answer key?

Yes. The answer key prints last, on a sheet of its own, and the line beside Print gives the page count on Letter or A4.
