Long a silent e, list by list
List 1 is one syllable: ape, chase, safe. List 2 puts a_e at the end of two syllables (a-wake, pa-rade), and List 3 ends in ate (debate, calculate). List 4 is compound words (pancake, bookcase), List 5 keeps the e before an ending (safety, basement), and List 6 has two consonants before the e (taste, range).
Three sheets and a spoken test
Word list prints the open list with a sentence under each word. Test sheet has numbered lines and a last page for the grown-up who reads aloud; ABC order and Missing letters come from the same words. Start test says each word, its sentence, then the word again.
- Before List 5, write safe and safety side by side: the e stays when the ending starts with a consonant.
Questions and answers
Why are cake, name and plate not here?
They are on our silent e word list, with the other first a_e words. This page adds 86 more, so a child who knows cake can go on to escape and pancake.
Why are made, sale and tale left out?
Each sounds the same as another word: maid, sail and tail. So do gaze and grade (gays, grayed). The test reads a sentence with every word, but these lists skip such pairs so no answer is marked wrong.
Does the silent e work in taste and range?
Yes. The a says its name even with two consonants before the e: taste, haste, range, strange. List 6 keeps them apart so a child sees the pattern stretch.
