Ut word family spelling practice for kindergarten
List 1 is the place to begin: seven three-letter words, but, cut, gut, hut, jut, nut and rut. List 2 puts more letters in front (shut, strut, glut, abut, rebut, uncut), and List 3 joins cut and nut to other words, as in haircut, shortcut and peanut.
Cut, shut and put stay the same in the past
The American Heritage Dictionary gives cut and shut one form for now and for the past: today I cut, yesterday I cut. Put, on List 4, does the same. Before an ending the t doubles: cutting, shutting, jutted, strutted, rebutted, abutted.
- Three rarer words: a glut is an oversupply, to abut is to touch along one side, and to rebut is to refute with opposing arguments.
Questions and answers
Can I print ut word family worksheets?
Yes. Any one of the four lists prints as a Word list with sentences, a Test sheet, an ABC order sheet or a Missing letters sheet. For a first sheet take List 1: cut, hut, nut and four more.
Do walnut and coconut rhyme with cut?
Not always. For walnut, chestnut, coconut and doughnut the American Heritage Dictionary gives a second pronunciation with a weak vowel in the last syllable, so they are left off. Peanut, hazelnut and beechnut have the full short u only and are on List 3.
Does put rhyme with cut?
No. Put has the vowel of book, so it stands on List 4 with input and output. Putt, the golf stroke, does rhyme with cut. It is spelled with two t's, as mutt is, so neither is on the rhyming lists.
Do out and shout belong to the ut word family?
They end in the letters u and t, but ou spells another sound: out, about, shout, scout, trout, snout and sprout rhyme with each other, not with cut. They are on List 4 with halibut and gamut, whose last syllable is weak.
