How this list was compiled: Our own selection and grouping of 192 English words in 24 word families, eight words to an ending, with our own hints. Every word has four letters or more, so no list repeats a three-letter word list. The letters left out of every word are the letters of its ending. Every word was checked by script on 2026-10-01 in two places: the Carnegie Mellon University Pronouncing Dictionary, a record of General American pronunciation (https://github.com/cmusphinx/cmudict), where the eight words of a family must end in the same sounds from the vowel on in every listed pronunciation, and the word's own entry at https://en.wiktionary.org/, where the family must share a rhymes key. A word that failed either check was left out (will, drop, nice and fine among them, each for a second pronunciation the dictionary lists). Each hint that says two words sound the same names a pair with the same pronunciation in that dictionary. Spellings are American. No published word list or reading programme was copied. How it works

A word family is a set of words that share an ending, so they rhyme: back, pack, snack. These word family worksheets hold 24 families of four-letter and longer words. A sheet prints one family with the ending left out, under a word box.

The families in Word list

Word list is under More options. Short vowels: -ack, -ank, -ash, -and, -amp, -ell, -est, -ent, -end, -ick, -ill, -ing, -ink, -ock, -ot, -uck, -ump and -unk. Long vowels: -ake, -ale, -ate, -ice, -ine and -ight. For three-letter families such as cat, hat and sat, use the CVC words worksheets.

Sort three families on one sheet

Under More options, choose Sort by list. It mixes five words from the family on show with five from each of the next two, to write under three headings. From List 1 that is -ack, -ank and -ash, which differ by one sound.

  • Trace and write prints the family as rows to trace, with no blanks: a first look at the pattern.
  • The last page of the print is the answer key. Untick Add an answer key as the last page under More options to drop it.
  • Knock and knot begin with a silent k. The hints under the tool say so.

Questions and answers

What is a word family?

Words that share the same last sounds, written the same way: the vowel and the letters after it, such as -ump in jump, bump and stump. The words rhyme, so a child who reads one can read the rest by changing the start.

Do the words of a family really rhyme?

Yes. Each family was checked in a pronouncing dictionary: all eight words end in the same sounds from the vowel on. A word with a second pronunciation in that dictionary was left out.

Can I save the word family worksheets as a PDF?

Press Print worksheet and choose Save as PDF in your browser's print window. One file holds the family on show: a page of eight words and a page of answers.

Can I print a family that is not listed?

Yes. Type up to 20 of its words in Your spelling words. A typed word loses about one letter in three at random, so to practice the ending choose Trace and write or Word shapes.
