Questions and answers

What are examples of closed syllable words?

Jam and desk, and every word on this page: each syllable ends in a consonant, so its vowel is short. Hap-pen, wit-ness and plan-et are words with two closed syllables.

Why is cabin split cab-in and not ca-bin?

The a in cabin is short, so a consonant closes it, and the dictionary splits the word cab-in. In ba-sin the a is long and the first syllable stays open.
