Long o magic e words, list by list

List 1 is one syllable: tone, grove, probe. List 2 ends on o_e after a first syllable: a-lone, ex-plode, tad-pole. List 3 joins a word to stone, hole or another o_e word: milestone, keyhole, pinecone. List 4 hides o_e inside a longer word: homemade, hopeful, microphone.

Three sheets and a spoken test

Word list prints the open list with a sentence under each word. Test sheet has numbered lines and a last page for the grown-up who reads aloud; ABC order and Missing letters come from the same words. Start test says each word, its sentence, then the word again.

  • Before List 3, have the child cover one half of keyhole or milestone and read each part alone.

Questions and answers

Why are home, bone and rope not here?

They are on our silent e word list with the other first o_e words. This page adds 65 more, so a child who reads home can go on to homesick and hometown.

Why are rode, rose and role left out?

Each sounds the same as another word: road, rows and roll. The test reads a sentence with every word, but these lists skip such pairs so no answer is marked wrong for the other spelling.

Is close a long o silent e word?

Only sometimes. Close the door ends in a z sound, and a close friend ends in an s sound, so it is left out of these lists.
