Long i spelling patterns, list by list

Lists 1 and 2 are i_e: mice and prime, then two-syllable words such as sunrise and invite. List 3 is igh (sunlight, tightrope). List 4 ends in y (fly, July, dragonfly) and List 5 has y inside the word (python, cycle). List 6 holds the long i words with i alone: lion, idea, library.

Three sheets and a spoken test

Word list prints the open list with a sentence under each word. Test sheet has numbered lines and a last page for the grown-up who reads aloud; ABC order and Missing letters come from the same words. Start test says each word, its sentence, then the word again.

  • Before List 4, say fly and gym: y at the end of a short word is long i, while the y in gym is short.

Questions and answers

What are words that begin with long i?

Item, ivy, idea and iris start with it, in List 6, where i ends the first syllable. Ice, in List 1, does too. In each the letter says its own name.

What makes the sound of long i?

The letter says its name, as in lion. Five spellings make it on this page: i_e (mice), igh (sunlight), y at the end of a word (fly), y inside a word (python), and i at the end of a syllable (ti-tle).

Why are side, night and write left out?

Each sounds the same as another word: sighed, knight and right. The test reads a sentence with every word, but these lists skip such pairs so no answer is marked wrong for the other spelling.
