  • Test List 5 with List 1: in hap-py and me the long e ends a syllable, spelled y in one and e in the other.

Questions and answers

What are words that begin with long e?

Each, eagle, easel, equal and ego all start with the sound. The first three are in the ea lists; equal and ego are in List 1, where e ends the first syllable.

Are ey long e words the same as y words?

They end with the same sound: monkey and money end like happy and bunny. Only the spelling differs, so List 5 and List 6 make a good pair for a mixed test.

Why is there no be, we, meet or piece?

Each sounds the same as another word (bee, wee, meat, peace), so a right spelling of the other word could be marked wrong. The lists leave out every pair like that.
