How it works
These long vowel worksheets open on a sort: fifteen words to write under long a, long e and long i. Under More options, Word list holds twenty lists: five mix the spellings of one vowel and fifteen keep to one spelling, such as igh.

Sort by vowel sound, or by spelling
A sorting sheet takes five words from the list on show and five from each of the two lists after it. From List 1 that is long a, long e and long i. From List 6 it is three ways to spell long a: a_e, ai and ay. Lists 9, 12, 15 and 18 start the same sort for long e, i, o and u.
Write the missing letters
Open More options and choose Missing letters under What goes on the sheet. Each word prints with blanks where its long vowel is spelled, c_k_ for cake and r__n for rain, under a box of the list's eight words. A word you type loses about one letter in three, not always the vowel.
- Lists 6, 12, 15 and 18 hold silent e words only, for a class that has not met vowel teams yet.
- The answer key prints as the last page. To leave it off, open More options and untick Add an answer key as the last page.
- Every word has a hint under the tool: sale sounds the same as sail, and blew the same as blue.
Questions and answers
What are the long vowel sounds?
A long vowel has the sound of its letter's name: a in cake, e in tree, i in bike, o in bone, u in cube. Long u says yoo in cube and huge; in rule, blue and flew it says oo.
Which long vowel spellings are on these worksheets?
Long a: a_e, ai and ay. Long e: ee, ea, and e alone or before a silent e. Long i: i_e, igh and y. Long o: o_e, oa and ow. Long u: u_e, ue and ew. Each spelling has a list of eight words.
Do the long vowel worksheets print with answers?
Five of the seven sheets do: Sort by list, Missing letters, Word shapes, Unscramble and ABC order. The key is the last page of the print. Trace and write and Write a sentence have nothing to mark, so they print no key.
Can I use my own long vowel words?
Yes. Type up to 20 words in Your spelling words, one to a line, and they take the place of our list. Sorting needs our lists, so with typed words that sheet prints them to trace instead.
