How it works
These Father's Day lists reach past father and dad to grandpa, stepfather, uncle and father-in-law, so every child has someone to spell for. List 6 is ten words to write in a card, from patient to trustworthy.

What the seven lists hold
List 1 is the day in ten words: father, grandpa, thank, fishing, June. Level 1, for kindergarten and 1st grade, has short words (tie, grin, pal) and things to do together (camp, swim). Level 2, for 2nd to 4th grade, has family words (stepfather, nephew) and compound words (workshop, cookout). Level 3, for 5th grade and up, has words for a card (generous, hilarious) and the day itself (appreciate, gratitude). Start wherever the speller is comfortable.
Two capitals, two hyphens, one space
June and Sunday are marked wrong in lower case while Capitals count is checked; uncheck it under More options. Father-in-law needs both hyphens and role model its space: without them the results say the letters are right and to check the spaces and hyphens.
- Paternal comes from the Latin pater, father.
- The plural of father-in-law is fathers-in-law: the s goes on father.
Questions and answers
Is it Father's Day or Fathers' Day?
Father's Day, with the apostrophe before the s. Federal law spells it that way and sets it on the third Sunday in June, and the American Heritage Dictionary enters the same spelling.
Which Father's Day words can a kindergartner spell?
Start with Level 1: tie, help, play, grin and pal in List 2, then camp, swim, cook and walk in List 3. Dad, hug and card from List 1 are short enough too.
How do you spell grandpa?
G-r-a-n-d-p-a, one word. Speech often drops the d, but the spelling keeps it. The American Heritage Dictionary marks grandpa as informal for grandfather, which is in List 4.
Which Father's Day words sound like another word?
Three: Sunday (sundae), climb (clime) and handmade (handmaid). Type the other spelling and the results say it sounds the same and show the sentence.
