How this list was compiled: Own work: every card is computed from standard tuning, not copied from a chart. Note cards: the six open strings are E2, A2, D3, G3, B3 and E4, with string 6 the lowest and string 1 the highest (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_tunings and https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Guitar/Tuning_the_Guitar ); each fret raises a string by one semitone and twelve semitones make an octave (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fret and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_scale ); a sharp and the flat of the next letter are one pitch (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enharmonic_equivalence ). The table was then tested against notes the Wikibooks guitar book names in words: fret 3 and fret 5 of the low E string are G and A (https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Guitar/Scales ), fret 3 of the A string and fret 1 of the B string are C, fret 5 of the high E string is A, and fret 5 of a string matches the next open string except fret 4 on the G string (Tuning the Guitar). Dot markers at frets 3, 5, 7 and 9 and a double dot at 12 are described as typical at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fingerboard . Chord cards: the notes come from the chord formulas at https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Guitar/Chord_Types (major, minor, dominant seventh, suspended), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minor_seventh_chord and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_seventh_chord , and every sounding string of each open shape was checked to play a note of its chord; only the open C7 leaves a chord note out (its fifth, G), and its card says so. Each shape was also compared with the chord diagrams shown at https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Guitar/Open_Chords and Guitar/Chord_Types (files hosted at https://commons.wikimedia.org ), or, for E7, Dm7, Em7, Am7 and Cmaj7, with the fret numbers printed at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_chord ; Fmaj7 is xx3210 at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_seventh_chord . Finger numbers are left out because teachers differ. All checked 2026-09-19. Licence: own work
How it works
These guitar fretboard flashcards cover every note on all six strings in standard tuning, open to fret 12: 78 note cards, plus 24 open chords with their notes. Name the note, flip to check, type it in quiz mode, or print one string.
Read the full guide
What each card shows
A note card names a place, String 6, fret 3; the back gives its note, G. A note with two names shows both: F# / Gb. A chord card shows a symbol, Am7 chord; the back spells it, A C E G, and the small line adds the open shape as fret numbers.
Print guitar flashcards, one string to a sheet
Each string set holds frets 1 to 12: 12 cards, one sheet. Choose a set, turn a card and press Print cards, then print both sides, flipping on the long edge, so G lands behind String 6, fret 3. The 48 natural notes take four sheets, the whole deck nine. With a single-sided printer, Print fold-over cards makes strips to cut and fold, one set at a time.
Start with Open strings, then Natural notes: 48 cards with no sharps or flats.
Fret 5 sounds the same as the next open string, except on string 3, where it is fret 4.
Left-handed? Strings are numbered by pitch, so string 6 is still the low E and every card works.
Questions and answers
What do I type in quiz mode?
A note name: G. For a note with two names either one passes, typed as F# or Gb with a small b, or in words, F sharp. For a chord, type its notes from the root up with spaces between them: A C E G.
Which string is string 6?
The thickest one, the low E. Guitarists number strings from the highest, so string 1 is the thin high E. Chord shapes run the other way, from string 6 to string 1: in x32010, x means skip string 6 and 0 means an open string.
Do the cards show chord boxes or a fretboard picture?
No. Every card is text: a string and a fret, or a chord symbol. A chord card gives the notes and the shape as fret numbers, not finger numbers, which vary by teacher. Keep a chord chart or your guitar nearby to see the shape.
