How it works
The 100th day of school is full of spelling traps: forty drops the u of four, ninety keeps the e of nine, and achievement puts i before e.

What the seven lists hold
List 1 is the day in ten words: hundred, count, collect, celebrate, hundredth. Level 1, for kindergarten and 1st grade, has short words (add, sum, dot) and the tens from ten to one hundred (two words). Level 2, for about 2nd to 4th grade, has things to collect, all plurals (pennies, cherries, envelopes), and counting words (bundle, tally, digit). Level 3, for 5th grade and up, has cent words and the celebration (milestone, achievement, congratulations). Treat the grades as a guide.
Cent is Latin for a hundred
Cent comes from the Latin centum, hundred. A century is 100 years, a centennial a 100th anniversary and a centenarian someone aged 100 or more. As a prefix, centi- means a hundred in centipede and a hundredth in centimeter.
- Kindergarten ends in ten, not den: the word is German, built from children and garden.
- Pennies and cherries swap the y of penny and cherry for ies.
