What the seven lists hold

List 1 is the day in ten words: worker, union, holiday, picnic, labor. Level 1, for kindergarten and 1st grade, has short words (pay, fix, tool) and people at work (teacher, farmer, barber). Level 2, for about 2nd to 4th grade, has the long weekend (travel, highway, suitcase) and jobs that end in er and or. Level 3, for 5th grade and up, has longer job names (electrician, architect) and working life (salary, career, livelihood). Treat the grades as a guide.

Er or or? The ear cannot tell

Gardener and operator end in the same sound, so the last two letters are learned word by word. List 5 has five of each. September is the only word that needs a capital while Capitals count is checked.

  • Plumber keeps a silent b from plumbum, the Latin word for lead.
  • Salary goes back to sal, the Latin word for salt.
