Valentine spelling words at three levels

Level 1 is for kindergarten and first grade: short words (cut, rose, dear) and words for making a card (paste, marker, signed). Level 2, about second to fourth grade, has compound words (classmate, postmark), flowers and colors (daisies, scarlet), treats (truffle, sprinkles) and kind words (caring, praise). Level 3, fifth grade and up, has mail words (recipient, salutation), endings in ion, ness and ship, and words for a good friend (sincere, amiable). The grades are only our suggestion.

Receiver and recipient

Both are in List 7. Receiver follows the old rhyme, e before i after c; recipient has i before e.

  • Daisies in List 4 changes the y of daisy to i before es.
  • Fourteenth is four, teen and th with nothing dropped; the day falls on February 14.

Questions and answers

Do these work as February spelling words?

Yes, for the middle of the month: hearts, mailbox and valentine all fit the fourteenth. The word February itself is on our 3rd grade spelling words page, with the other months.

Is it dear or deer?

A card begins dear friend; a deer lives in the woods. List 1 reads The note began with dear friend, so deer is marked wrong, with a note that it sounds the same.

Why are cookie and lollipop missing?

The dictionary also allows cooky and lollypop, and the test takes one spelling only. Bonbon, truffle and caramel are in List 5 instead.

Is this list right for a class party?

Yes. Every word is about cards, friends, flowers, treats or kindness, and none is about romance. A word a class does not want comes out with Edit this list.
