How this list was compiled: Our own starter words: common short words from early readers, grouped by what a pupil has to look at to tell them apart (first letters, word endings, a spelling that does not match its sound). This is not the Dolch list or the Fry list, and it follows no published list's levels or grades. Sound notes describe general American speech and were checked on 2026-09-18 against the pronunciation lines of each word's Wiktionary page, for example https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/said. One word for each color

Each picture takes one word from your list for each color, plus one for the squares that stay white. The Kite has 5 colors, so it uses 6 words. Shuffle the words draws a different handful and keeps the picture. Pupils must read the leave-white word too, or they color squares that should stay empty.

Color by sight word kindergarten sheets

For kindergarten, 3 known words on the Sun is plenty. A first grade group can take the Kite. The 8 starter sets are ours, grouped by what pupils mix up: on and no, or said, could and does. They are not the Dolch or Fry lists and carry no grade levels, so paste your own program's words.

  • Read the key aloud together first. A pupil who cannot read a key word colors by guessing.
  • Type a color word and it goes to its own color: red to red squares, white to squares left white.
  • Same picture, different list for each reading group. Words over 8 letters are left out. One 8-letter word shrinks the type in every square.

Questions and answers

Are the words I type saved or shared?

Typed words stay in this browser. To pass a list to a colleague, send the words and let them paste.

Is there a color by sight word free pdf?

Yes. Each color by sight word free printable here becomes a PDF in your browser: press Print this sheet and choose the PDF option in the print dialog. Page 1 is the worksheet, page 2 the colored answer key.

Do the squares hold words or numbers?

Words. This is a sight word color by word page, not a sight word color by number. A pupil cannot match digits and skip the reading. On these sight word coloring sheets the word is the only clue. Color by number printables are separate.

How many words do color by sight word worksheets need?

One more than the picture has colors: 3 for the Sun, 4 for the Pig or the Octopus, 5 for the Grapes or the Duck, 6 for the Kite. Untick A word in the white squares too in More options and each needs one fewer.
