How it works
These CVCC words worksheets open on a sort: fifteen words to write under blend first, as in stop, blend last, as in nest, or a blend at both ends, as in twist. Word list has lists by blend.

Sort by where the blend sits
The page opens on List 13, CCVC words such as trip and clam. The sort adds List 14, words with a blend at both ends such as drift, and List 15, CVCC words such as band and lift. The child writes five under each heading.
Write the missing blend
Choose Missing letters under What goes on the sheet. Each word prints with its blend left out, __og for frog and te__ for tent, under a box of the list's eight words. Lists 1 to 6 serve as ccvc worksheets, one family of blends each, and Lists 7 to 12 as cvcc worksheets, by ending.
- The answer key prints as the last page. To leave it off, open More options and untick Add an answer key as the last page.
- Word shapes prints one box for each letter, and in these words each letter is one sound.
- The hints under the tool name the slip to watch for: leave the r out of frog and it turns into fog.
Questions and answers
What are CCVC and CVCC words?
C stands for a consonant sound and V for a vowel sound. A CCVC word starts with two consonants: f-r-o-g. A CVCC word ends with two: t-e-n-t. Every word here has a short vowel and four sounds, or five in List 14.
What is a consonant blend?
Two or more consonants side by side with no vowel between them, each one still heard: bl in black, st in last. A digraph such as sh is different: there two letters spell one sound.
Which blends are in the lists?
At the start of a word: bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl, br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr, sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st, sw and tw. At the end: mp, nd, nt, st, lk, lp, lt, lf, ft, pt and sk.
Do the worksheets print with answers?
Five of the seven sheets do: Sort by list, Missing letters, Word shapes, Unscramble and ABC order. The key is the last page of the print. Trace and write and Write a sentence have nothing to mark, so they print no key.
