How this list was compiled: Our own selection and grouping of 160 English words of two, three, four and five syllables, twenty lists of eight in five sets of four lists: everyday words, words with a doubled letter in the middle, words that begin with a prefix, words that end with a suffix, and school words. Our own hints. The letters left out are one or two letters, mostly a vowel in the middle of the word, or the doubled letter, the prefix or the ending. Every word has an English entry at https://en.wiktionary.org/ (license CC BY-SA 4.0), read on 2026-10-03. Syllables were counted the same day in the Carnegie Mellon University Pronouncing Dictionary, a record of General American pronunciation (https://github.com/cmusphinx/cmudict), as the number of vowel sounds, and every listed pronunciation of a word must give the count of its list; words said with fewer syllables in a second listed pronunciation are left out (family, different, camera, favorite, additional and cooperation among them). Where a Wiktionary entry prints an American or unlabeled pronunciation (145 of the 160 do), every such form that is not marked nonstandard has the count of its list; also left out for a shorter American form there: chameleon, accompany, unfortunately, celebration, similarity, decimal, continent, consonant, mathematical and imaginary. Necessary, unnecessary and necessarily keep their four, five and five syllables in the American pronunciations of both sources; the shorter forms Wiktionary gives are British or marked nonstandard. What a syllable is was read on 2026-10-03 at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syllable. Spellings are American. No published word list or reading program was copied. Licence: own work

How it works

The sheet on show sorts fifteen words under 2 syllables, 3 syllables and 4 syllables. Twenty lists of eight run from pencil to photosynthesis: everyday words, doubled letters, prefixes, suffixes and school words.

Choose the lists to sort

The lists come in sets of four: two, three, four and five syllables. Lists 1 to 4 are everyday words, 5 to 8 have a doubled letter (carrot, gorilla), 9 to 12 a prefix (unpack), 13 to 16 a suffix (helpful), 17 to 20 are school words. A sort takes the list on show and the two after it.

Multisyllabic words phonics worksheets with blanks

Choose Missing letters under What goes on the sheet. The blank is the part that is easy to get wrong: a middle vowel in comp_ter, the double in ca__ot, the prefix in __pack, the suffix in help___.

  • Words said two ways, such as family, camera and different, are left out: a syllable sort would have two right answers.
  • For multisyllabic words worksheets 5th grade classes can use, a sort from List 2 has three, four and five syllables.

Questions and answers

What is a multisyllabic word?

A word with two or more syllables. Pencil has two, computer three, ukulele four and imagination five. A syllable is usually built around one vowel sound, so counting vowel sounds counts syllables.

Which lists suit a multisyllabic words 2nd grade worksheet?

The grade is our suggestion, not a school's list. Lists 1, 5, 9, 13 and 17 hold two-syllable words such as pencil, carrot and unpack; the five-syllable lists are 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20.

How were the syllables counted?

By the vowel sounds in a pronouncing dictionary of American English, named in the source line on this page. A word is on a list only when every pronunciation given there has the same count.

Is there an answer key?

Yes: the last page repeats the sort with each word under its number of syllables. To leave it off, open More options and uncheck Add an answer key as the last page.
