How this list was compiled: Words chosen and hints written by the Homeroom Tools editor. The grade is our suggestion: the United States has no national curriculum (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_curriculum, read 2026-09-20), so no national list sets a grade's spelling words there. Spellings are American, and every word has an entry page at https://en.wiktionary.org/ (all 200 checked on 2026-09-20). The rule that a silent e keeps a g soft, as it does in huge, was read at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_e, and the sounds of wh in who and of n before k at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_orthography, both on 2026-09-18. Maths as the Commonwealth form of math was read at https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/maths on the same day. Licence: own work

The printable 1st grade spelling words, list by list

Lists 1 to 11 pair consonant teams and blends with short vowels. Lists 14 to 17 bring in silent e. Lists 13 and 18 hold 20 words that break the patterns, such as was and does. The spelling lists, at the foot of this page, give every word a hint. In jump the m is easy to miss: watch for jup.

  • To trace the words, set What goes on the sheet to Trace and write. It prints no answer key.
  • With the Name and Date line on, most lists take 2 pages on Letter and 1 on A4.
  • For Lists 13 and 18, set What goes on the sheet to Write a sentence. It prints a ruled line for each word.

Questions and answers

Which words belong on first grade spelling words worksheets?

Words a child can sound out by pattern, plus 20 common ones to learn whole, such as said. The United States has no national curriculum, so no national list sets spelling words by grade. The grade here is our suggestion.

Can I make 1st grade spelling words worksheets from my own list?

Yes. Type up to 20 words of up to 16 characters in the box marked Your spelling words, and they replace our list. A typed word loses about 1 letter in 3, and Shuffle the words picks other letters.

Do these work as English spelling worksheets for grade 1 outside the United States?

Yes. Spelling is American, and of the 200 words only math changes: most Commonwealth countries write maths. For grade 1 spelling words worksheets with maths, type List 3 with maths in its place, and choose A4 under Paper.

Can I save a sheet as a PDF or send it home?

Press Print worksheet and choose Save as PDF in your browser's print window. Name the file, for example spelling worksheets grade 1, list 4. Share link puts typed words into the link itself, so keep student names out of it.
