How this list was compiled: Own work: cards written for this deck. Every rhyme, and every word that must not rhyme, was checked in the General American pronunciations of the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary at https://github.com/cmusphinx/cmudict : two words count as a rhyme only when every sound from the stressed vowel to the end matches in each pronunciation listed. The pairs were then compared with the rhymes each word's entry gives in Wiktionary, in entries such as https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/bear . Pairs that rhyme only in some accents are left out. Checked 2026-09-30. Licence: own work

How it works

Rhyming words flash cards that ask a question: cat: cot or hat? The back gives the rhyme, hat, and more words with the same ending sound. Later sets rhyme words that are spelled differently, such as bear and chair.

Four sets, easy to tricky

Same spelling pairs words that end alike: pig and wig. The two-spellings sets pair words that sound alike and look different: rain and cane, blue and shoe. The wrong choice often looks right: snow and now end in the same letters and do not rhyme. Odd one out lists three words; name the one that does not rhyme. Turn one card, then choose a set under Show only, or open More options to type the rhyme.

Print rhyming cards for a center

Turn a card, then press the print button under it for twelve cards to a sheet, answers mirrored on the back. Cut them out and let the child say the rhyme before turning the card.

  • Rhyme is about sound, not letters. Say both words aloud before choosing.
  • Every pair is a full rhyme in General American speech. Pairs that rhyme only in some accents were left out.

Questions and answers

What are rhyming words?

Words that end in the same sounds from the last stressed vowel on: cat and hat, rain and cane. The letters do not have to match, and matching letters do not make a rhyme: snow and now.

Do rhyming words have to be spelled the same?

No. Bear, chair and care rhyme with three different spellings, and so do blue, shoe and zoo. Words spelled alike can also fail to rhyme: bear and near, or come and home.

What are some easy rhyming words?

Short words with the same ending: cat and hat, pig and wig, bug and rug, hen and ten, sun and fun, bell and well, star and car, book and cook.
