How this list was compiled: Our own selection and grouping of 220 English words into 22 lists of 10, one trouble spot to a list, with our own hints. The grade is our suggestion: the United States has no national curriculum (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_curriculum, read 2026-09-20), so no national list sets a grade's spelling words there. Spellings are American, and every word has an entry page at https://en.wiktionary.org/ (all 220 checked on 2026-09-20). Rules and facts in the hints and list names were read on 2026-09-19: a final consonant doubles before a suffix only when the last syllable is stressed and ends in one vowel and one consonant, compelled doubles in all forms of English, focused is the predominant spelling in British and American English, and British labelled against American labeled, at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_and_British_English_spelling_differences; the rhyme i before e except after c, its extension for ei sounding like a, and weird, seize, leisure, either, neither, protein, caffeine, foreign, height and forfeit as exceptions, at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_before_E_except_after_C; in turning to il before l, im before b, m or p and ir before r, at https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/in-; con turning to col before l, com before b, m and p and cor before r, at https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/con-; the forms ac, af, ap, as and at of ad, at https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ad-; suc, suf and sup from sub, at https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sub-; the silent b of debt, doubt and subtle, and debit as a related word where it is heard, at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_letter; silent n after m at the end of a word (autumn, hymn), the silent t of mortgage, l of salmon and ch of yacht, sc as s before e, i and y, and ch as k (chord, choir, ache), at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_orthography; the e kept in changeable to keep the g soft and the u that keeps g hard in league and intrigue, at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_and_soft_G; the long a sound of ei in beige and reindeer, hymn sounding like him, symbol like cymbal and reign like rain, and lightening as the act of making something lighter, at the entries for beige, reindeer, hymn, symbol, reign and lightening at https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ followed by the word. Questions and answers

What spelling words should a 6th grader know?

The grade level is our suggestion, not a school's list. We chose each word for the pattern it teaches: the three doubles in committee, ei after c in receive, ible in accessible, the b you cannot hear in doubt.

Why does referred have two r's and offered only one?

Stress decides it. A final consonant doubles before ed when the last syllable is stressed and ends in one vowel and one consonant. Refer is stressed on fer, so referred. Offer is stressed on of, so offered.

What is the rule for ie and ei?

I before e, except after c: achieve, but receive. When ei sounds like a, as in sleigh and reign, the e also comes first. Weird, seize, protein and the 7 other words on List 10 break the rhyme.

Can I print an answer key?

Yes. Under More options, switch on Add an answer key as the last page and 1 more page prints with every blank filled in. Trace and write and Write a sentence print no key, since neither has answers to check.
