Only voices built into this device are used, so the words are not sent to a speech service to be read. With no voice, a person reads the words from the last page of the test sheet.

A kindergarten spelling bee word list in three rounds

Round 1 has four lists of three-letter words: short a (rag), short i (bib), short u (bud), then short e and o (den, cob). Round 2 has two consonants at the end (land), ck, ng and nk (deck, lung), a double letter at the end (tall, fuss) and two consonants at the start (crib). Round 3 has five-letter words such as stamp and drift, letter teams such as brush and itch, and a final list of two-syllable words.

The device as pronouncer

Press Start round: the device reads the word, a sentence, then the word again, and the speller types it. Marks come at the end, and the missed words can be tried again. The grade is only our suggestion.

  • Elk and end are the only Round 1 words that start with a vowel.
  • In the double-letter list, tall, well and fuss double the last letter, and so does cuff.

Questions and answers

Are these spelling bee words for kindergarten free printables?

Yes. Choose Word list and press Print for the reader's copy of a round, ten words with their sentences, or choose Test sheet for a numbered blank sheet. Both print free from this page.

What are good words for a kindergarten bee?

Short words a child meets in print. Round 1 opens with sap, ram and had, and Round 3 ends on sandbox, itself and topic. All 120 are our own picks, not a contest's list.

Why are sun, sea and pick missing?

Each has an everyday sound-alike (son, see, pic), and a bee word here has one right answer. Ant is out too: in much American speech it sounds like aunt.

Are these the same as the kindergarten spelling words?

No. None of the 120 is on our kindergarten spelling words page or on the 1st grade bee list, so a class can use both without meeting a word twice.
