Number word spelling practice, list by list

Lists 1 to 3 are one to twenty, then zero, the tens, hundred and thousand. Lists 4 to 6 are hyphenated numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine. Lists 7 to 10 are ordinals: first to twentieth, the dates up to thirtieth, then thirty-first to ninety-ninth. List 11 has hundreds and thousands in two words, with million and billion, and List 12 has fraction words from half to twelfths. The order is only our suggestion.

  • Eleven and twelve began as one left and two left, counted past ten, says the American Heritage Dictionary.
  • Fifth and twelfth swap the ve of five and twelve for an f.
  • Eighth adds only an h to eight, so it has one t.

Questions and answers

How do you spell the numbers 1 to 20 in words?

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty. Lists 1 and 2 hold them in this order.

Is it forty or fourty, ninth or nineth?

Forty and ninth. Wiktionary marks fourty as obsolete and nineth as a misspelling. Four keeps its u in fourteen and fourth, and nine keeps its e in nineteen and ninety.

Do numbers need a hyphen when written in words?

Compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine take one, and so do their ordinals, such as twenty-first. One hundred is two words with no hyphen, and so is ten thousand; hundred stays singular: two hundred. The test marks a missing hyphen or space wrong.

Which spelling words with numbers sound like another word?

Six: one (won), two (to, too), four (for, fore), six (sicks, sics), eight (ate) and fourth (forth). The sentence read with each word tells which is meant, and the results say so when the sound-alike is typed.

How do you spell the ordinal numbers first to twelfth?

First, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth. List 7 holds the first ten, and List 8 goes on from eleventh to twentieth.
