All 20 shape names

With a curved side 5

  • circle No sides and no corners: every point on a circle is the same distance from the center. The Circles button draws it from the top, round to the left, the same move as the letter O and the numeral 0.
  • crescent The shape of the moon when only a thin curve of it is lit. The word comes from the Latin crescere, to grow.
  • heart Two round tops, a dip between them and a point at the bottom. The Hearts button draws it in 1 stroke that starts in the dip.

With a curved side, continued

  • oval An egg shape. The word comes from the Latin ovum, egg, and it is a loose word for any closed curve that looks like the outline of an egg.
  • semicircle Half of a circle. Its curved side is an arc of 180 degrees, and in everyday use the straight side that closes it belongs to the shape too.

3 or 4 straight sides 8

  • diamond The everyday name for a rhombus that stands on a corner. The name comes from the shape of a diamond gemstone.
  • kite 4 sides in two pairs of equal length, where the equal sides touch each other. One half mirrors the other across a diagonal. It is named after the flying kite.
  • parallelogram 4 sides in two parallel pairs, with opposite sides the same length. At 13 letters it is the longest word in this list, and at Extra large it is squeezed a little to fit the row.
  • rectangle 4 right angles, with opposite sides equal and parallel. A rectangle that is not a square is also called an oblong. The Rectangles button draws one 1.6 times as wide as it is tall.
  • rhombus 4 sides that all have the same length. Every rhombus is a parallelogram, and a rhombus whose angles are right angles is a square.
  • square 4 equal sides and 4 right angles. A square is a rectangle with equal sides, and it is also a rhombus with right angles.
  • trapezoid 4 sides with one pair or more of them parallel. Trapezoid is the North American word. In British English the same shape is a trapezium.
  • triangle 3 straight sides and 3 corners. The Triangles button starts at the top point and draws the left side first.

5 straight sides or more 7

  • decagon 10 sides and 10 corners. Any shape with straight sides has one corner for every side.
  • heptagon 7 sides and 7 corners. It is also called a septagon.
  • hexagon 6 sides, from the Greek hex, six. The cells of a honeycomb are hexagons.
  • nonagon 9 sides and 9 corners. It is also called an enneagon.
  • octagon 8 sides and 8 corners. The Octagons button draws it with a flat side on top, the way a stop sign stands.
  • pentagon 5 sides and 5 corners. The Pentagons button draws all 5 sides equal, with one corner at the top.
  • star The Stars button draws 5 points in 1 stroke, starting at the top point. Count the straight sides of the outline and there are 10, two for each point.

How this list was compiled: Written for this site. Side counts and other names were checked on 2026-09-18 against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygon, and the notes on single shapes against https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circle, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oval, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semicircle, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crescent, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rectangle, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhombus, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trapezoid, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallelogram, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kite_(geometry), https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hexagon and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_sign, all on 2026-09-18. How this tool draws a shape (where it starts, its proportions, the 10 sides of its star) was read from the tool's own drawing code on 2026-09-18, and it is one common way to draw the shape, not the only one. The CDC milestone quoted on this page (draws a circle, when shown how, on the list for 3 years) was checked on 2026-09-20 at https://www.cdc.gov/act-early/milestones/3-years.html. Licence: own work

Count the sides 7

  • A hexagon has 6 sides. Regular hexagons fit together with no gaps, which is how a honeycomb is built.
  • A pentagon has 5 sides. Pentagons is one of the three shape buttons that are off when the page opens. Hexagons and Octagons are the other two.
  • A rectangle has 4 right angles. Rectangle is a word from the Latin for right angle. Its opposite sides are the same length.
  • A square has 4 equal sides. 4 sides of one length and 4 right angles. The Squares button starts at the top left corner and goes down first.

Count the sides, continued

  • A star has 5 points. True of the star this tool draws. Each point has 2 straight sides, so the outline has 10.
  • A triangle has 3 sides. 3 sides and 3 corners. Any shape with straight sides has as many corners as sides, so the count works for both.
  • An octagon has 8 sides. 8 sides and 8 corners. Trace the sentence, then count the corners on a row of octagons.

Curved shapes 4

  • A circle has no corners. It has no straight sides either. A circle is one curved line that closes on itself.
  • A heart has a point at the bottom. The Hearts button starts in the dip at the top, goes over the left side, down to the point and back up the right side, in 1 stroke.
  • An oval looks like an egg. Oval comes from ovum, the Latin word for egg. The Ovals button draws one that is one and a half times as wide as it is tall.
  • Half a circle is a semicircle. In everyday use a semicircle includes the straight side that closes it, which is a diameter of the circle.

Shapes with two names 3

  • A diamond is a rhombus. Diamond is the everyday name and rhombus is the name used in geometry. The Diamonds button draws 4 equal sides, taller than it is wide.
  • A rhombus has 4 equal sides. Give a rhombus 4 right angles and it becomes a square.
  • Every square is a rectangle. A rectangle with 4 equal sides is a square. A rectangle that is not a square has its own name too: an oblong.

Shapes around us 3

  • A honeycomb is made of hexagons. The cells of a honeycomb in a beehive are six-sided.
  • A stop sign is an octagon. The stop sign is a red octagon. In the United States the eight-sided shape was chosen in 1922 and has been used ever since.
  • The kite shape is named after a kite. In geometry a kite has two pairs of equal sides that sit next to each other, like the toy that flies on a string.

51 shapes on the first page

At Large (19 mm) the first sheet holds 51 shapes on Letter paper: 7 circles, 5 ovals, 7 squares, 5 rectangles, 6 triangles, 8 diamonds, 7 stars and 6 hearts. Open Lines and shapes to trace to add pentagons, hexagons and octagons. All 11 shapes take 2 pages at Large and 1 page at Medium.

Where each shape starts

Each outline is a single stroke that runs anticlockwise from its dot. Circles and ovals start at the top and go round to the left. Squares and rectangles start at the top left corner and go down first. Triangles, diamonds and stars start at the top point, and hearts start in the dip. That is one common way.

  • In More options, tick Give every line or shape a page of its own: 7 rows, then the shape's name.
  • At Extra large (26 mm) a row holds 5 circles or 3 rectangles.
  • Set What to practice to Shape names and the sheet traces the words circle, square, triangle and rectangle.

Questions and answers

Are these free shape tracing worksheets?

Yes, every sheet prints free with no account. Pick up to 12 kinds from the 11 shapes and 12 lines, set 1 to 8 rows of each, and choose Dotted, Outlined or Solid grey. Share link reopens the same shapes on another device.

What age can a child start tracing shapes?

The CDC's milestone list for 3 years includes drawing a circle when shown how. A milestone there is something most children (75% or more) can do by that age. The list here runs from round shapes to shapes with more corners, as advice only.

Is a diamond the same shape as a rhombus?

Yes. Diamond is the everyday name, and rhombus is the geometry name for a shape with 4 sides of one length. The Diamonds row draws one that is taller than it is wide. A rhombus whose angles are right angles is a square.
