The 12 flat shapes on the sheets

Show the table

A sheet draws each shape at a new size and turned a new way, so a square standing on a corner is still a square and a triangle is not always the one with a flat base. Sides are straight sides; a corner is where two sides meet.

The flat-or-solid sheet sets them beside six solid shapes.

Solid shapeWhat it is made of
Cube6 square faces, 12 edges, 8 corners
Rectangular prism (cuboid)6 rectangular faces, 12 edges, 8 corners
Square pyramid5 faces (1 square, 4 triangles), 8 edges, 5 corners
Cylinder2 flat circular faces and 1 curved surface
Cone1 flat circular face and 1 curved surface
Sphere1 curved surface, no edges and no corners

Every sheet has a short code, printed at the foot of the sheet and of its answer key. A share link brings the same sheet back, figure for figure, so a key printed later still fits the copies you handed out.

How it works

These shape color sheets open on a box of 20 shapes. A rule names 4 kinds and a crayon for each, such as every triangle red; the child colors them, then counts each kind. Press New sheet for another box.

Pick the shapes

Shapes sets how many are in the box: 12, 16, 20 or 30, and 30 prints as two boxes of 15. Which shapes opens on First 6: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, oval and hexagon. 10 shapes and All 12 add harder ones, such as the rhombus.

Color, then count

The rule is printed above each box, with a blank for each count. The tool picks the 4 kinds. Two or three other shapes fit no rule and stay white, so the child has to check every shape.

Print with the key

Print or PDF gives one black and white page for Letter or A4. The answer key follows on its own page: the same box with R, B, Y or G on each shape, and the counts.

  • Set out only the red, blue, yellow and green crayons. With a full box on the table, the rule gets lost.
  • Used as shapes and colors coloring pages, the sheets practice both: the child reads a color word, then hunts for the shape.
  • Have the child cross off each shape after coloring it, then count the crosses of one color.

Questions and answers

Are these printable shapes coloring pages or worksheets?

Both in one. Each sheet is a shapes coloring page with a job: color by the rule, then write how many of each kind. There is no page of big shapes to color freely; every shape belongs to the counting task.

Which shapes are on a color shapes worksheet?

First 6 draws circle, triangle, square, rectangle, oval and hexagon. 10 shapes adds semicircle, rhombus, trapezoid and pentagon, and All 12 adds parallelogram and octagon. There are no stars or hearts, and the colors are always red, blue, yellow and green.

Is this shapes coloring for preschoolers or kindergarten?

Both, with help for the youngest. For preschoolers choose 12 under Shapes, keep First 6, read the rule aloud and count together. In kindergarten the sheet fits two Common Core goals: naming shapes whatever their size or turn, and counting objects sorted into categories.

Why are the shapes turned and drawn at different sizes?

So a child learns the shape and not one picture of it. A triangle resting on its point is still a triangle. Shapes turn in steps of 15 degrees; for upright shapes, untick Turn the shapes under More options.

Do shapes coloring worksheets come with an answer key?

Yes. The key shows the same box with a letter on each shape, R, B, Y or G, then the counts and how many shapes stay white. Sheet and key carry the same 6-character code, and Share link brings that sheet back.
