27 letters, and their names
The Real Academia Española counts 27 letters: the 26 of English plus ñ, called eñe. Ch and ll were once counted as letters; today the academy calls them digraphs, two letters for one sound. All 27 letter pairs, at the foot of this page, gives each letter's Spanish name, from a, be, ce to equis, ye, zeta.
A word for every letter
Open Pick from the 42 alphabet lines and press a line such as Gg gato or Ññ ñu. It replaces the alphabet, so the child traces the pair and then a Spanish word that starts with it. The same list has the digraphs and the letter names.
- Say each letter's Spanish name aloud as the child traces it: eme, ene, eñe.
- The mark over ñ is a tilde, called virgulilla in Spanish. Trace the n first, then add it.
- K and w appear in Spanish only in borrowed words; the lines here use koala and web.
Questions and answers
How many letters are in the Spanish alphabet?
Twenty-seven. The Real Academia Española lists a to z with ñ after n. Ch and ll are not on the list: the academy says they were traditionally counted as letters and are now treated as digraphs, pairs of letters.
What are the names of the Spanish letters?
The academy recommends one name each: a, be, ce, de, e, efe, ge, hache, i, jota, ka, ele, eme, ene, eñe, o, pe, cu, erre, ese, te, u, uve, uve doble, equis, ye, zeta. Other names, such as ve and i griega, stay correct.
Is there a line for ch, ll and rr?
Yes. Under Pick from the 42 alphabet lines the line ch ll rr gu qu has the five digraphs, and three more lines add a word: ch chocolate, ll lluvia and rr torre.
