  • banana 3 a's. Each a closes at the top before its short stick comes down.
  • bubble 3 b's and an l, so four tall letters in six.
  • cactus 2 c's. A c is an o that stops early: leave the gap on the right.
  • cocoon 3 o's. Close each one where it began.
  • daddy 3 d's, then a y that drops under the baseline.
  • eleven 3 e's. Each starts with the short line across the middle.

A word for every letter, continued

  • fluffy 3 f's. The crossbar of f sits on the dashed line.
  • giggle 3 g's. All three tails should stop at the same depth.

  • six foxes 2 x's. The two slants cross halfway up.
  • tattle 3 t's. The crossbar sits on the dashed line, and t stops short of the top line.
  • unusual 3 u's. A u is a cup with a stick; without the stick it reads as v.
  • vivid 2 v's. Keep the point at the bottom sharp.
  • window 2 w's. Both points of w touch the baseline.
  • yummy 2 y's. The long slant of y carries on under the baseline.
  • zigzag 2 z's. The top and bottom of z are level, and only the middle line slants.

Words that mix b, d, p and q 8

  • bad b first, d last. The round part of b faces right, and the round part of d faces left.
  • beard b and d at the two ends of one word, facing each other.
  • bold b and d with an l between them, all three reaching the top line.
  • bump b and p share a shape: b stands on the baseline and p hangs from the dashed line.
  • dip A tall letter, a small one and a tail: three heights in three letters.
  • drop d at the start and p at the end: one stick goes up, the other goes down.
  • pedal p, then d. Both round parts sit on the baseline at the same size.
  • squid q and d in one word. The round parts match; only the sticks differ.

Digits and number pairs 8

  • 9:30 A clock time. The colon takes the width of one narrow letter.
  • 12 21 The same two digits in both orders, for writers who turn teen numbers around.

How this list was compiled: Written for this site on 2026-09-18 and revised on 2026-09-20. Spellings were checked against a computer word list, which has every word here except the plain plurals sisters and foxes. The drilled letter in each word was counted. Other details in a description were checked one by one against the tool's Print style. No entry is a person's name or a brand. Licence: own work

Alphabet rows 12

  • A B C D E F G Capitals A to G. In the Print style a capital stands on the baseline and stops a little short of the top line, lower than l or h.
  • a b c d e f g h i The first 9 lowercase letters with a space between each, so every letter gets its own start.
  • Aa Bb Cc Dd Ee Capital and lowercase pairs, A to E. At Medium each of these five pair rows fits on one row of the sheet.

Alphabet rows, continued

  • Ff Gg Hh Ii Jj Pairs F to J. Gg and Jj are the first tails of the alphabet: the capital sits on the baseline, the lowercase drops under it.
  • H I J K L M N Capitals H to N. All seven are built from straight lines, apart from the hook of J.
  • j k l m n o p q r The middle 9 lowercase letters. Three of them have tails: j, p and q.
  • Kk Ll Mm Nn Oo Pairs K to O. Mm needs more room than any pair except Ww, so it shows at once whether the letters are being cramped.
  • O P Q R S Capitals O to S. Every capital in this row has a curve in it.
  • Pp Qq Rr Ss Tt Pairs P to T. Capital P and Q stay on the baseline, while lowercase p and q hang under it.
  • s t u v w x y z The last 8 lowercase letters. Only t rises above the dashed line, and only y drops under the baseline.
  • T U V W X Y Z Capitals T to Z. Only U has a curve; the other six are straight and slanted lines.
  • Uu Vv Ww Xx Yy Zz Pairs U to Z. Most of these lowercase letters are small copies of their capitals, which makes this the easiest pair row.

Letters that start the same way 10

  • c o a d g q The round letters. In the Print style all six start just under the dashed line and go round to the left first. Learn c and the other five follow.
  • cod dog add good 4 words built only from round letters, for practice at closing each circle.
  • e s f Three letters with a family of one. In the Print style e starts lower than any other letter: halfway between the baseline and the dashed line.
  • hum barn ramp bump 4 words full of humps. Count them: m has two, and n, h, r, b and p have one each.
  • l b h k t f The letters that start high. l, b, h and k begin just under the top line and come straight down. t is shorter and starts lower.
  • r n m h b p The hump letters: down, back up the same line, then over. r, n, m and p start just under the dashed line; h and b start near the top line.
  • see fees less self 4 words for e, s and f. The curves of s should be the same size, top and bottom.
  • tall ball hill belt 4 words with 12 tall letters between them, for reaching the top line every time.
  • v w x y z The slanted letters. All five start at the top left, just under the dashed line, and have no curves at all.
  • wavy zany vex kiwi 4 words that lean on slanted letters. Keep the points of v and w sharp, so they do not read as u.

Look-alike letters and numbers 10

  • a u o c An a left open at the top reads as u, and an open o reads as c. Close every round letter.
  • b 6 g 9 q Letters and digits that swap when a writer hurries. 6 and b face the same way; 9, g and q face the other way.
  • b d p q One shape turned four ways, which is why these four get reversed. b and d are tall; p and q hang under the baseline.
  • bed dab bud pod quip 5 words that mix b, d, p and q. The word bed looks like a bed: the b is the headboard and the d is the footboard.
  • h n r h is n with a tall stick, and r is n that stops early. If the stick of h stops at the dashed line, the letter reads as n.
  • i t l j Four sticks of four lengths: i stops at the dashed line, t goes a little higher, l reaches the top line and j drops under the baseline.
  • n u m w n turned over looks like u, and m and w are the wider pair. Humps go over the top; cups sit on the baseline.
  • S 5 Z 2 O 0 Three capitals beside the digits they are mistaken for. 5 has a flat top and S does not; 2 has a curved top and Z does not.
  • sun nun run mum wow 5 words that swap between n, u, m and w.
  • was saw on no pot top 6 words in three pairs. Each word turns into its partner when the letters are written in the wrong order.

  • A guppy and a jellyfish glide by quietly. 8 words with 10 tail letters. Every tail should stop at the same depth.
  • b d f h k l t The 7 tall letters. They rise above the dashed line, and all but t reach the top line.
  • g j p q y The 5 tail letters. Each one drops under the baseline. Under More options, tick Add a fourth line to print a line where all 5 tails stop.
  • Keep every tail short and every tall letter tall. 9 words that say what they practice, with 14 tall letters and 3 tail letters.
  • The little kitten hid behind the ladder. 7 words with 18 tall letters and no tail letter, so the top line does all the work.
  • My dog digs happily by the muddy gate. 8 words that mix all three heights: 10 tall letters and 9 tail letters.
  • Pretty gray pigeons pick up every crumb. 7 words with 8 tail letters and only 4 tall letters, so the row looks low and heavy unless the tails stay short.
  • r s u v w x z The other seven small letters. None goes above the dashed line or under the baseline.

  • An ant and an owl sat on an old oak log. 11 words that start with round letters, which makes uneven gaps easy to see.

  • Leave one letter o of room after each word. 9 words that state the rule of thumb for word spacing.
  • No two words should touch or drift apart. 8 words. A young writer can check each gap with a fingertip; an older one judges it by eye.
  • We go in, we sit, we eat, we go out. 10 words and three commas. A comma sits right after its word, and the space comes after the comma.

How this list was compiled: Written for this site on 2026-09-18 and revised on 2026-09-20, except four traditional pangrams in common use (the quick brown fox, the sphinx of black quartz, the five boxing wizards, the jackdaws). Their wording and letter counts were checked at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pangram and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_quick_brown_fox_jumps_over_the_lazy_dog on 2026-09-18. The second page is also the source for the early form of the fox sentence, beginning A quick brown fox, which The Boston Journal printed in 1885 as a line set by writing teachers. The date of Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday of November since 1942, under a law signed in December 1941) was checked at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgiving_(United_States) on 2026-09-20, and the jackdaw's gray nape at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_jackdaw on the same day. Every pangram was checked to hold all 26 letters, and the words, letters, tall letters and tail letters a description names were counted. Other counts were made one by one. Where a description says where a letter starts or how tall it is, it describes the tool's Print style. No line names a real person or a character from a book, film, show or game. Licence: own work

How it works

Good handwriting practice is one short line, traced twice, then copied once. This page holds 92 ready lines in 10 groups: alphabet rows, letter families, look-alikes, heights, spacing, pangrams, numbers and three holiday sets. It opens at Medium, 14 mm.

Read the full guide

Improve handwriting one fault at a time

Type your own lines, or press one in Pick from the 92 practice lines. Choose by the fault on the writer's page. Wrong starting points: c o a d g q, all starting just under the dashed line. Reversals: b d p q. Tails that hit the next row: the group Tall, small and tail letters.

Rows, pages and single words

At Medium a Letter or A4 page holds 9 rows: 3 rows of text, each traced twice with an empty row under it. So b d p q takes 3 rows, and a pangram wrapping onto 3 fills the page. For single words, open More options and set What to practice to Drills: 42, such as bubble or 6 9, repeated across each row.

  • Keep penmanship practice to one sheet a day, and stop when the last row looks worse than the first.
  • For Halloween handwriting worksheets, use Owls hoot and bats swoop at dusk: five o's to close.
  • Copy the same pangram each month and date it. Side by side, the sheets show which letters still need work.
